Does Cowon, or another company, make a converter that will allow me to plug the Cowon X7 into iPod compatible devices? My car, my Altec Lansing, and my Zepplin speaker dock are all made to support the iPod, so they have the "male" iPod USB end that plugs into an iPod.
A device that would have the iPod USB opening (to plug into the speaker dock or car stereo) and a "male" Cowon X7 USB plug would act as a middleman of sorts. I could plug it into my car and speaker docks, and then plug the Cowon X7 into it. Such a device would be very helpful. Does anyone know if it exists? Thank you. Short answer: No, can't be done.
The Apple Dock connector is just that - An Apple Dock connector. One of the many connections it provides is USB, but it can also be used as a lineout (digital and analog) and as an interface to control the iPod, ie. from the steering wheel in your car. The ADC has 30 pins and only 4 or 5 of these are used for USB. Because iPods, iPhones and iPads are so abundant, many companies have chosen to support this proprietary hideous abomination of a connector. But only Apple devices are allowed to use it - If cowon fitted the ADC to the X7 Apple's lawyers would come after them in nasty ways. Cowon has chosen to fit an even worse connector to their players... |

I'm so sick of all the different connectors. It's like having a unique audio jack in every player that needs a special chord to plug into your headphones. Totally an inefficient design technology. The only way it's ever a good thing is if improvements on transfer speed is accomplished.

Just a note, the connector is standard in Korea and is also used by Samsung for example. Korea is Cowon's home country and their main market after all, and the connector is just the Korean version of mini USB and is probably more welcomed there than mini USB. From Cowon's point of view it was a good choice.

Sure, but Cowon often doesn't give a shit on what happens outside Korea. Their new Tablet, the R7, is a piece of useless crap and the Cowon AC1, which was released a couple of days ago, is a freaking car cam.

Hehe, don't worry, beta 1 (the version after the current alpha 3) will be released soon and will have lots of improvements.

They're just trying to give us IA mods less work to do.
...Sadly, they're succeeding.

... i should also have added that its worth looking on both hackaday and instructables for user modifications if you dont mind a bit of soldering.
especially hackaday as they love tearing into ipod\iphone stuff. |
