Default A non-technical owner's review of X7

Hello! I'm a non-technical middle-aged woman (gasp!) who loves Cowon for its sound.

I've had my new X7 (black) for 24 hours. I got it from Haldex (Australia) -I recommend them highly! Jonathan, who repairs Cowon players, has been great.

I had no problems charging and transferring Mp3, Wav and jpeg files. I have a PC running Windows XP.

I bought the X7 for sound quality. I listen 99.9% to classical music and hate iTunes and loathe the sound of iPods. I'd had an X5L for 5 years but it had finally died. I'd have been completely happy with the Cowon sound and no video screen but I was drawn to the larger capacity of the X7 and thought it would be nice to be able to carry around photos to show friends. The J3 looked to have a better quality screen but quite a small one and was limited to 32G.

Well the sound of the X7 is WONDERFUL - better even than my X5 so my main objective is met. Photo viewing hasn't been so successful and made me think the X7's screen resolution was pathetic but my husband warned me that some of the photos I'd loaded did not have very high resolution. So I need to go back and select better photos before I make a final evaluation. Interestingly the Cowon video that comes pre-installed is quite OK to watch - definition is much better than the photos I loaded.

I haven't yet tried to load any of my own videos as most are Mp4 and I gather I have to use Jet Audio to convert the format. The CD that came with the X7 says it's for Windows 98 so I put it aside. Now I read that Cowon still uses an OS that is compatible only with old Windows systems. Is that so?

I'm not greatly taken with the touch screen as I have found you really need to tap it with some pressure to get it to work. I hate the beeping noise that goes with that. It has also taken me time to find my way around the screens. My husband has an iPod Touch and if you want video and photos and fast movement that would be the way to go. But for music listening pleasure it has to be Cowon.

I initially had a few problems with getting sound to come through the earphones. I discovered that you have to click in the jack with more deliberation than I've experienced before. The UI is clumsy and response to scolling through photos is very sluggish. (Mind you I apparently loaded over 1000 photos). Also the internal clock is losing time and I don't know if that's a sign of a faulty machine or something I haven't yet figured out.

The X7 is a strange sort of beast - larger than an iPod touch and heavy - though it doesn't feel that much heavier than the X5. It's not a machine to take jogging and is almost too big for one's hand. Still I like the weight - it feels solid. I imagine it will take me some time to get used to the X7 touchscreen interface. It took me while to find my way with the X5 but now I really miss the little joystick!

I'm hoping cases and screen protectors for the X7 will be available soon as currently I have it stuck in a sock for protection, which is not a very cool look!

Sorry I can't be more technical in my review but I do enjoy reading all the technohead raves on this forum! (Not that I understand half of what you are talking about!) I look forward to more X7 owners to help me troubleshoot when need be.

Nice review! One thing: To stop the beeping (if you haven't already figured it out), go to Setting/System/Beep and adjust the slide bar to "off."

Default Thanks

Thanks LMX! I sucessfully turned off the beeping and now have silent "'touching"! A great relief!

I don't suppose you know why the clock keeps losing time?

Unfortunately I do not know why the clock is losing time. It could be a firmware problem or just an issue with the clock itself, so I would try resetting the player, possibly reformatting the player (if you really want to go to great measures!), or if all else fails, waiting for the next firmware upgrade. You could also post the problem in the X7 forums and see if you get a response. Good luck!

X7 looks much like a E-book reader if it only could read PDF it would make it a special & great player.

A suprisingly positive review by Engadget.

Agreed. Also, no mention of the built in speaker that I could find...

How good does the X7 sound. Is it better in terms of SQ, compared to the usual cowon products like the S9, D2 or J3? If it is definitely better than those, it is worth trying out.

Default ......the x7

Just got my x7 in the mail last night...

FIRST off, let me tell you this thing is HUGE. not a good x5 replacement if thats what you thought....(I did)....It's at least 1CM thicker on all 4 sides.

The screen feels liquid...the touch is NOT responsive at all. Especially when compared to my g2 android phone that I use every day. I don't have the patience to deal with such a horrible, clunky UI. 9 times out of 10 I hit something that I was NOT aiming for. I have really small fingers so I KNOOOW it isn't me This player works GREAT with my nintendo DS stylus, however. I was very excited when I actually HIT something that I was aiming for.

The sound quality is....cowon which speaks for itself. my X5 is ready to be retired, buuuut since I have to return this x7, I guess I'm going to have to ride it till the wheels fall off.

X7 = epic fail. not worth the price or the 160GB. The battery life is the only thing worth purchasing....but not for $300+. Does anyone have any idea what I should get to replace my X5? ;-; i'm about to start the amazon return process....

*is so depresessed* I guess Christmas will come late this year *sigh*

Default Got mine 3 days ago ~ Review

I had read a few reviews but ordered anyway because I have been waiting on storage capacity and screen size.
I like mine with few complaints.
*Sound is best I ever had.
*Screen size is perfect, I watch movies in bed before going to sleep.
*I am IMPRESSED with quality build.
*I sync with media player, everything went perfect except hasn't synced my playlist, can't figure this one out.
*Video quality should have been better than 480x272 with this screen size. This is the only thing I think they bungled badly.
*My touch screen is actually very sensitive, I also took the protective cover off and is is sensitive to the slight touch. Not as good as my Ipod but not far from it.
*Artwork is bigger than screen, I believe they will repair this with firmware update.
*It is big, but that is what I was looking for.
all in all I am happy with the purchase, should have been a little cheaper though.

Anyone got any ideas on syncing playlist? it is the only thing that didn't sync, all video and music did. I used media player.
Peace

Just the playlist in media player. My creative labs picked it up but for some reason the X7 will not. I don't know any other way to make my playlist.
Playlist folder shows on player but nothing there. Can't figure this one out. This is my first Cowon, so, it may be that I am simply not doing something right, however, media player has a sync playlist to device that I used to no avail.
