Default D2+ firmware all messed up

I bought my D2+ about a year ago and I've been loving it for the most part, up till about a month ago when it started to behave eradically. The problems include: 1. freezing up after playing one track, or freezing up trying to play the first track after booting up. 2. Not displaying track album and name or album art. Or it also sometimes has the same track title for every single music file stored. 3. Not always recognizing the additional sd card, and if it does recognize it, it's all messed up and not really accessible.
That more or less sums up the problems. Out of frustration, the device has become almost useless at this point.
Yes, it has the latest firmware upgrade(2.13) and that did not fix any of the problems as hoped.
My question at this point: Can I wipe the thing clean and reinstall 100% of the firmware from scratch with only the firmware upgrade files? If I delete all files/folders or format the D2, is it simply a matter of dropping the firmware upgrade files into the root folder?
Thanks for any suggestions.
