1 Gig seemed like way too much back then. Was barely able to get it half full, before I threw it in the water (accidents happen...) It was a decent player. But sonicstage, that was like the ugly neighbor of iTunes. That killed it for me. I had the black one btw.

I used high capacity chargeable batteries, so no problem for me

My first two portable DAPs in the sense we talk about them today were:

1) A no-name 1aaa powered sd card player similar to this.

2) Archos Jukebox 10GB, with Rockbox

I'm not sure which one I got first, probably the SD player. The SD player was like a shrunk-down cassette Walkman (put a few albums on it, no display so you'd navigate by clicking buttons and listening). I liked it but didn't use it much. The Archos (bought used when it was already pretty ancient) made me understand how cool it was to have a large music collection in a small package to travel with, and that got me interested in other players. My first "good" players were a Sansa M260 (4gb) and later a Cowon D2 (16gb+SD).

Before any of these, I had:

- A Panasonic portable cd/mp3 player, not sure what model, not sure if it counts. cd/mp3 means you could burn a cd-r with mp3 files on it and the player would play them. I gave it away last year.

- A JVC in-dash cd/mp3/am/fm player for my car, same type of thing as above, not sure if that counts either. I still have and use this when driving.

BTW, the Sony Network Player was awesome, the bad thing?
SonicStage, complete GARBAGE and it was a extremely slow program!

The MP3 itself was very well built and it felt nice on hand, buttons easy to reach etc

The Mercury MP250 with 64MB of memory it came with the necklace type headphones. The sound quality was mediocre and it wan on AAA batteries. What a change it been since that player.
