I would like at the very least the ability to play MP4 vids on the S9, any sense that Cowon will add this in the future?

Dont know, think they let it out for a reason.
Im guessing a financial reason, makes sense cuz they didnt incorporate x264 & mkv support. Who knows, maybe a future update will make us all happy? |

no...it is unlikely that companies add support for new formats in firmware...you usually see improved capability for formats, but rarely new ones (though not never... ie..sansa clip added flac at one pt.)

well, no.. they improved some WMV codecs.
wmv always was supported along with divx/xvid. Quote:
I actually forgot it was .mp4 and just wasted 20 minutes placing/removing the 1,4 gb movie.. :') |

isn't MP4 similar to Xvid? i may be way off base here, but it was my understanding that MP4 and AVI are essentially containers, and that within these containers you could effectively use the same compression algorithms/techniques/whatever...
if my understanding is correct (fingers crossed), then MP4 shouldn't be too hard to include in a firmware update? |

Psst..
MP4 is only a container, not a video codec. so is MKV H.264 is what we should be wanting...

right, that's what i meant, codec. i can't believe i forgot the term
even still, if MP4 is a container that can have the same codecs as an AVI, then why not support MP4? Quote:

Well first off it has been in the specification were reassessed for the S9 it did say that it would play H.264. cowon will implement, but when who knows.
Anyway my opinion doesn’t matter has I have hard evidence, just open up the s9 raw binaries (firmware) and you will clearly see as plane as day strings with H.264 in it lord knows its 500mhz dual soc can cope with it. Is That enough evidences for you its coming guys we will just have to wait. Anyway if your interested use you favoured text viewer or hex editor I used Winhex and used it's tool to dump all strings in one handy text file. I think Winhex offers a trail if not there always Vim Theirs also mp4 strings ![]() I carn't remember the offset Last edited by Headcased; 03-28-2009 at 18:27.. Reason: Remember the offset |

yes

and wait, and wait. kind of like waiting for the 32GB version. i'll just keep dreaming that when the 32gb version comes out, Cowon will release firmware 2.11 with MP4 and limited H.264 support. of course, later firmwares will have better H.264 support (i can dream, can't i?) |

I don’t see any other reason for have the strings in there. I haven’t seen them in the d2 firmware.
I just hope that it not just the left over’s of cowon’s implementation of the nebular OS Dose anybody know how many other cowon devices use the Nebular RTOS ? Last edited by Headcased; 03-29-2009 at 05:07.. Reason: Nucleus not nebular dont know how i done that maybe it was the clocks |

Sensational
![]() I don't care about the lack of h.264-support. I think Cowon works on it.

I'd sure like MP4/h.264 support. I have several ways to make movies in that format from any VHS, DVD, video camera, or even security camera.

If you look at the specs of Telchips 7091 (I don’t know which version) 500mhz you can do a hell of a lot
Hears what would be possible Audio Codec : MP3, WMA, ADPCM, OGG, AAC V2, AMR, AC3, BSAC Video Codec : MPEG2, WMV, H.263, H.264, MPEG4 Still Image Codec: JPEG, BMP, PNG DRM : MTP, WMDRM10(PFS2.0),JDRM, OMA Broadcast : T-DMB, DVB-T, DVB-H, ISDB-T, CAS Storage : NAND, SD/MMC, HDD, Harp, MoviNAND, USB 3D Solution : 3D UI Function : TV Out, Camcorder, Camera, GPS Wireless Solution : Bluetooth, WiFi Firmware Upgrade : USB, SD OS : Nucleus , WinCE 5.0, Linux I would of preferred a Linux os rather than a nucleus os So I diced to look though latest beta that cowon issued here my findings Interesting strings that I found Video Capture Build date 2009.02.28 Boot Rom ? ROM SIZE BIG sorce file for demuxing H.264 H264 TCCDemuxTask.c mpeg4 width-height dab stuff ACC stuff MPEG4Audio Video file audio decodeing stuff for AC3 WAV ACC MP2 AC3 WAV AAC MP2 TimePos divx stuff DivX Caption Seek Failed! Streaming Stuff Connected, stream open bootstarp stuff memory allocations for h.264 verious refrenses to Telechips SDK drm trash web stuff maybe over Blutooth http 1.1 refrenses debug stuff (intresting) more investigation need![]() as to it os looks like a mash up might be based on Nucleus RTOS but Probably proprietary Telechips os built with there SDK |
