My naming scheme is fairly similar to that of others':
MUSIC/<Artist>/<(Year) Album Name>/<song>.mp3

I also only use cover.jpg for my album art, though I doubt that makes much of a difference for startup time.

Just used the SD formatter. 15 dots before; 6 dots now (with no new content). I'm amazed. Thanks a lot Traveler0612.

Another confirmed success - with a 4 GB D2, 16 GB Adata SDHC card and FW 3.54, went from 15 dots to 6 dots with no new content.

I do not have a MUSIC directory on my SDHC. I just have the albums in the root directory. I went from 15 dots to 6 on an 8GB SDHC.

Default FAQs on SD Memory Card Formatter

Here are three of the most interesting FAQ's from the Panasonic Site where the SD Format Software came from:

Question 1. What is SD Memory Card Formatter used for ?

Answer 1.

This software is used to format SD Memory Cards so they are compliant with SD Memory Card standards.
Typically, SD Memory Card file systems formatted using standard PC formatting software are not compliant with SD Memory Card standards. If you have formatted the card using the PC's standard formatting program, make sure to reformat using SD format to take full advantage of maximum SD Memory Card performance.

Question 2. Can I also format cards other than the SD Memory Card ?

Answer 2.

This SD Memory Card formatting software is for the formatting of SD Memory Cards only. The formatting program will not function properly if you are not using a SD Memory Card.

Question 3. What happens when I format an SD Memory Card with a standard PC formatting program ?

Answer 3.

The SD host equipment may not be able to recognize the SD Memory Card. Writing data to the card may take longer than necessary and some functions may no longer work.

An earlier version of the SD Format software is also available at the SD Card Association.

Makes me wonder why Cowon has a format option in JetShell?

I also wonder if the SDHC Card I returned to Newegg was really bad...I had formatted it using Windows and it was no longer recognized by my D2...

Edit: I wonder what this would do the D2 if you had reformatted your internal memory on the D2 using Windows???

Well, given that Panasonic advises the use of their utility only for SD cards, in addition to the fact that the Cowon D2 ships preformatted, it doesn't sound like a very good idea even if the utility allowed for the option to do so.

Flash may be flash, but I think I'd rather trust Panasonic on this one.

What do you think is inside the D2? It is the same kind of chips that go inside the plastic housing of a SD/SDHC Card.

Lots of members have reformatted their Internal memory prior to firmware upgrades using Windows. Me included...We did that trying to get buggy firmware to work...

Firmware 2.54 will not work on my 4GB D2...Maybe this utility will fix that problem...Time to play...

Well, I just did the quick format (The default settings).

Loaded 2.54.

Inserted the 8GB SDHC (1,703 MP3 files) and turned it on...14 dots after the first start.

Loaded 415 MP3 files on the internal memory and it still takes 14 dots after the first start. The files seemed to transfer a lot faster???

All the MP3 files (2,118) show up in the track count.

Put in a blank (never used) 8GB SDHC and it took 4 dots to start.

Put the original 8GB SDHC Card back in and it took 14 dots after the first start.

The thing is that 2.54 now works like it never did before on my 4GB D2.

Guess the next thing to try is loading my new 8GB SDHC with the same files as my old card and see what the startup time is like and then try reformatting my old 8GB SDHC and compare the 2.

I will also do a full erase on the internal memory and see what that does, if anything. But will do that after using the D2 with 2.54 for a couple of days...Just to make sure 2.54 keeps working...

Tried it with an empty, freshly formatted 8gb A-Data card. Went from 15 dots to 4. Magnificent!
Edit: Internal memory and SD card are completely full, 5 dot startup time.

I formatted my 16GB Transcend card and came down from 12 to 6 dots. Great!
I'll format the internal memory before the next FW-update.

Tried it on 4GB D2, found the following issues,
After first reboot and update the player freezes and becomes non responsive. After pressing reset rebooted and worked fine until I went to browser folders and all folders were labled MUSIC and player froze when tried to enter any folders. Same problem on restart.

I also experimented with a format of internal memory using exFAT file system which has been added to Vista SP1 for use with removable media up to 32GB. On reboot the D2 reformats itself back to Fat32.
