THIS CONTAINS NO INFORMATION ABOUT COWON RECOVERY FILES.
Linuxstb, a RockBox developer designed a tool named Tcctool that can be used to Recover a BRICKED D2. Tcctool was not originally designed for this. It was designed as a development tool intended to remove the need for recovery (i.e. allowing developers to safely run test code on the device). Experimentation has proved that it can recover a Bricked D2. You can download Tcctool at the following URL: http://download.rockbox.org/utils/tc...tool-win32.zip I got permission to post a link to Tcctool and downloading it from the above URL will always ensure you have the latest build. There are two sets of instructions for the WINDOWS version of Tcctool and they are both a work in progress. Maybe someone will do the same for the Linux and Mac versions of Tcctool. One is for a D2 that will not turn-on at all after trying to do a firmware upgrade/downgrade. The other is for a D2 that hangs up on the spinning circle screen and is not recognized by your computer after trying to do a firmware upgrade/downgrade. If you find anything out of sequence or missing from either set of instructions, please post a change.

Instructions for Using Tcctool with Windows XP for a D2 that is BRICKED and will not turn on at all.
Download the tcctool from here: http://download.rockbox.org/utils/tc...tool-win32.zip Create a Folder named Tcctool on your hard drive and extract the files from tcctool-win32.zip to it. Remove your External Memory card before doing the below. Copy the d2N.bin file from Folder 0 of the firmware you want to install on your D2 to the Tcctool Folder to make things easy. You will need to run Tcctool 3 times. Once to load the required drivers to get the D2 recognized. Then run it again after copying the contents of Folder 0 and Folder 1 to the root of the D2. You can do Folder 2 like you normally would. Put your D2 into the Recovery Mode: Press and Hold the Menu Button and Press the Power Switch to on. The screen will be blank, but your D2 is on. The D2 MUST BE IN THE RECOVERY MODE FOR THIS TO WORK!!! Connect your D2 to your computer. The New hardware Wizard Window should appear. Perform the following: • Select "No, not at this time" to the question about connecting to Windows Update. • Click Next to continue. • Select "Install from a list or specific location • (Advanced)" • Click Next to continue • Select "Search for the best driver in these locations" • Unselect "Search removable media" • Select "Include this location in the search:" • Browse to the folder that contains the tcctool-driver-win32 folder. • Click the Next Button • You should get a Window that States "Please wait while the Wizard installs the software (TCC7801 usb-boot mode). • Click Finish Now you need to open a Command Prompt Window. Click Start > Run > type cmd > OK Navigate to the drive/folder where the Tcctool folder is located and type the following command, "tcctool -d cowond2 d2N.bin" without quotes. This is assuming you copied the d2N.bin file to the same folder Tcctool is located in. You should get something that looks like this in the command prompt window: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\roger>d: D:\>cd tcctool D:\tcctool>tcctool -d cowond2 d2N.bin tcctool v0.1 - (C) 2007 Dave Chapman This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. [INFO] Using device "Cowon D2" [INFO] Searching for TCC device... [INFO] Found TCC device, uploading application. [INFO] Patching application uploaded successfully! D:\tcctool> (the above example is what it looks like on my computer. Yours will be different based on how your computer is configured) If the command is successful your D2 should start (Windows XP…Not sure about other Windows versions) and you will get a blank screen on the D2 with a window at the bottom. You should also be able to view the contents of D2 in My Computer or Windows Explorer. Copy the contents of Folder 0 to the now visible root of the D2. Disconnect your D2, put it in the Recovery Mode again (Press and Hold the Menu Button and Press the Power Switch to on. The screen will be blank, but your D2 is on.) and reconnect it to your computer. Run tcctool again. The D2 should show the software being installed. Disconnect your D2 again, put it in the Recovery Mode and reconnect it to your computer. Your D2 screen should show firmware 0.00 and go white Copy the contents of Folder 1 to the root of the D2 Disconnect your D2 Turn it on and it should load the file you just copied to the root (I might have missed running Tcctool here again. If this does not work run Tcctool again.) and shut-off when it has finished installing the contents of folder 1. Connect the D2 to your computer and you should get the Cowon Screen showing the Firmware version you are trying to load and then it goes white with a window at the bottom. Copy the contents of folder 2 to the root of the D2. Disconnect it and then turn it on. You should get a bar indicating the firmware is being loaded. This will take more time than the other times and shut off automatically. Turn the D2 on and your D2 should be recovered. If you have a copy of your pervious system folder, just copy it to your d2 and all your settings should be back.

I had a problem in installing a font size (made corupted by me, it is only my faut) and needed to use the tcctool to restore my D2.
I had problem to aply instructions in this post (no have work enought in english lessons at school, it is only my faut too). First: I was not in recovery mode Second: I tried to execute tcctool with a run, not with an execute. Third: When I executed "cmd", it open: "C:\Documents and settings\Administrateur>" and I could not give the way to my restore files with a command, So I puted the "tcctol.exe" and the "d2N.bin" at this place, before type the "tcctool -d cowond2 d2N.bin" command, and then it works ! With the agree to Dalmane98 and Dominic (iAudiophile's administrator), I post here a french traduction from Deden (a french cowon users forum, DENCOWON's administrator), completed by me. Now I hope if frenchs have same problem than I had, it will easier for them ro resolve it: Le meilleur, voire le seul moyen, pour restaurer un D2 vraiment planté, est de réinstaller le firmware (à la fin de cet article, un lien vous envoie vers un tutoriel vous expliquant comment procéder). Source : iaudiophile.net Article sur le forum français : http://dencowon.fr/forum/post1908.html#1908 Special thanks to Linuxstb and Dalmane98

This is a guide to assist those who are not familiar with how to navigate in the Command Prompt Window when using Tcctool.
The command prompt is simply a window that by default displays the current directory, or in windows term a folder, that you are in and has a blinking cursor ready for you to type your commands. To open a Command Prompt Windows you just need to go to Start > Run and type "CMD" without quotes and click OK. By default when you open a Command Prompt Window in XP it will show the following in the Window: C:\Documents and Settings\roger> roger is the account that I used to log on to my computer with. If you click on the Start Button you will see the User Account that was used to log on to XP computer with. Examples of using the "CD" command To move down one level to a subdirectory, just type CD and the Folder Name at the Command Prompt: C:\Documents and Settings\roger>CD Tcctool This moves you down one level from your current directory to the subdirectory and you should see something similar to this: C:\Documents and Settings\roger\Tcctool> To move up one level of the directory tree: C:\Documents and Settings\roger\Tcctool>cd .. This moves you to: C:\Documents and Settings\roger> Another "CD.." would move you up one more level to: C:\Documents and Settings> Another way of doing this can be accomplished by using the "CD ..\" command. You can use either the"/" or the "\" command, but they all have to be the same. Every directory contains a hidden directory .. (dot dot) that is a shorthand name for this directory's parent directory. Using this shorthand name enables you to move up the directory tree very quickly without having to enter long pathnames. C:\Documents and Settings\roger\>CD ..\..\..\ would move you to: C:\> To move to another directory using a relative pathname: C:\Documents and Settings\roger\>CD ..\..\..\tcctool This moves you up 3 levels in the directory tree and then moves you into the subdirectory Tcctool: C:\>Tcctool I did not cover every variation possible using the CD command to navigate in a Command Prompt Window. Just the basic ones. To change to a different Hard drive you would just type the Drive letter with a colon (D at the command prompt and press enter and then use the CD commands as described above to navigate on that drive:C:\>D: D:\> Hopefully this will help those of you having a problem.

Dalmane-- I've read this thread and if I understand correctly, to get to recovery mode I need to hold down the power slide while holding down the menu button WHILE plugging the d2 into my usb. I do this and nothing happens. Screen stays black. I'm not 100% sure if my D2 is completely bricked per se. It does turn on, but only after I put the slide into the "hold" position and then unhold and then turn on. But even then, it comes on for a few seconds and then shuts off again. This is the only instance where I can get the unit to turn on at all though. Any advice?

You should print out the instructions, read them carefully, check off each one as you do it and everything will work just like it has for so many others... To put your D2 into the Recovery Mode: Press and Hold the Menu Button and Press the Power Switch to on. The screen will be blank, but your D2 is on. Blank = Black... Does your D2 show up in Explorer? You did get some responses...I admit they did not really seem to help. I think that based on your earlier posts that you have a hardware problem that is associated with your Power Switch. IMHO, you have a hardware problem and not one that can be fixed with software. You should get a RMA number and send your D2 in for repair. Hopefully it is still under warranty... Just my 2¢ worth of advice...And that's the best I can do.

Hi i am doing this process after my D2 got bricked
. I am confused at the second step-running tcctools again. I did up to here sucessfully -Disconnect your D2, put it in the Recovery Mode again (Press and Hold the Menu Button and Press the Power Switch to on. The screen will be blank, but your D2 is on.) and reconnect it to your computer. When you run tcctools again do you do exactly the same command as before? Cause i did that and saw a loading bar but whern i plugged my d2 in again did not see a white screen and cant see the folders of the D2. Thanks Edit- dw i fixed it now. Thanks! It would most likely get more views too... I am glad that Tcctool helped you get your D2 working again. You would also need to provide some details on what caused your display problem. Using Tcctool would not cause that. Sorry, I could not help you more, but your detail are kind of slim to none, so I have not got a clue as to what to search for.

No it does not void the warranty...It does not do anything but allow you to connect via the USB connection using the Telechips USB drivers rather than using the ones in the Cowon FW.

Thanks for making this post. My D2 bricked today as well.
I tried installing older firmware, in the middle of the 2nd part of the '0' folder update, my computer would no longer recognize my D2 as a USB drive. Which prompted the 'New hardware Wizard Window'. PC couldn't find it, then my computer shut down. yay... Pretty much in the middle of the '0' folder portion of the 2.41 firmware update my D2 quit, and didn't complete the update. My D2 now stays at the Blue "Starting" menu, with "0.00" written on the bottom. I did the suggested steps, entered the suggested commands and tcctool successfully updated my cowon, but my PC still won't show my D2 in 'My computer', and the d2 stays on the same blue screen. Any advice would mean the world to me. Thanks so much. |
