Does it work on Linux? Yes. Could I get it to work? No. Luckily, K9copy transcodes DVD's in about 2 hours (slightly longer than it would take to play the DVD) into 320x240 Xvid avi with unwatchable A/V sync, and then a script will take the output of that and make it a DivX compatible with the D2 in about 40 minutes. So I'm pretty much transcoding a DVD on the fly, and then re-encoding it to get it o play on the D2. The whole process take about 3hours. As long as it works, I guess.

iPod Touch = iPhone - Phone, if my understanding is correct...so ideally there shouldn't be much, if any, visual difference.

Also, the iPod Touch has a black rather than silver bezel. I can see sales of silver enamel markers skyrocketing once the Touch is released.

Ghetto iPhone ahoy!

The Touch one looks really good compared to the D2 and the features are "ok" I guess. The interface however seems to be much better. It's a shame it doesnt have an expansion slot, so you're stuck with a 16gb limit. Then again I was actually planning on just buying one 8gb SDHC card when I would purchase the 8gb D2 at the end of the month and not just leave it at that, but it was just nice having the option to expand it even further.

So a D2 8gb + 8gb SDHC would cost me about 350 euro in Holland. An iPod however will cost 400 euro. Hm...

Well, I guess I'll wait till the end of September. Both the 8gb D2 and iPod touch will be available here by then, so I have some time to make up my mind. It's just a tough choice now, both have their positive sides. I just hope the SQ is at least above average, I could live with that...
Lol well with the D2 you will have to spend a lot of time on it, be it buggy firmware, updating firmware (takes about 5 mins) converting EVERY movie/clip to 320x240, loading the SD card slowly (without a card reader), getting A/V sync right (some movies are really annoying to watch..), and more BUGS.

iPods are much more stable and just easier, but lack features and cost more. however without rockbox you are pretty much tied down by iTunes, MP4 format movies (though the resolution makes up for it) and only 3 music-type formats. and the battery sucks (or maybe I'm just used to charging once every week). sound quality is also not that great according to most people, but I'm not an expert).

So yeah..there you go. I'm guessing the iTouch will have better navigation and screen

Oh I'm well aware the SQ of an iPod isnt much compared to Cowon's players, but then again the touch isnt out yet, so I wouldnt know how it sounds like. I guess its the same as the iPhone. Still I think I'll be disappointed a bit. Which X5 owner who listened to an iPod wouldnt?

I have never used iTunes before and opinions are spread out about it, so being stuck with iTunes wouldnt be a valid reason for me to not buy the touch. If I'll be happy with it is another thing though.

But during my 2.5 year use of an X5L I came to the conclusion that I never really used all the features it had. Like the FM radio, recording and even ogg/flac support. My entire music collection is in mp3 (few wma albums) for crying outloud. Besides, the few wma albums can easily be converted, which wouldnt take much time at all. Some Apple employee already stated Apple doesnt really fight hackers, so hacks will be available really quick after the initial release. There already are alot of 3rd party apps IF iPhone apps will work on the touch and chances are they will.

It may sound like I already made up my mind, but the reason I'm still in doubt is because I don't want to blindly follow the flock and I think Cowon is a nice company. If I buy the D2 I probably won't be disappointed at all. However if I would buy the touch, I'd either be really really happy or really really disappointed.

Help

Not sure if this is appropriately on-topic, but I didn't want to start a new thread, heh.

I too am unsure if I should go with the iAudio D2 or the iPod Touch, and I need some help.

I actually don't have a D2 yet, in fact, I am currently only using an iPod Nano. Don't get me wrong, I dislike Apple products as much as anyone here, iTunes especially annoys me. The only reason I am using the iPod Nano is because I didn't have an MP3 Player and it came free. =P

When it comes to what I want, I mostly want a product for music, so it seems like I should be getting a D2. However, as much as I subconsciously want the best sound quality, I don't think my ears are good enough to pick up much difference anyway. I do however notice that iPod Nano with the iPod earbuds are horrible, lol (didn't bother upgrading earbuds yet).

However, I do love other features such as the ability to browse the internet, set up alarms(with an internal speaker), have a calendar, be able to read text, play games, etc. (In somewhat order of importance, ie. I really want the internet!) From the reading I did on the D2 and its flash-ability, if I remember correctly, the D2 has all of that except for the internet.

That's when I get stuck.
  • As I stated before, although sound quality is important to me, I unfortunately don't think my ears are good enough to appreciate it all. (+0.5 D2)
  • I absolutely love the internet, though I'm not yet sure how much I will be finding a mini-screen internet-browsing-only useful. I would love to have Google Maps on the go though . (+1 iPod Touch +0.5 PSP)
  • Memory doesn't matter too much to me, 4GB is good enough for me if I'm just using music (I don't mind changing up my drive) and having no videos or whatever would take up a lot of space. (+1 D2 +1 PSP)
  • Price is a pretty important factor for me, I'm quite poor TBQH . (+1 D2 +1 PSP)
  • Battery life doesn't really matter too me much either as long as it isn't bad. (+0.5 iPod Touch +0.5 PSP)
  • Love D2's ability to operate as a flash drive extremely easily. (+1 D2, +? PSP)
  • iPod Touch has internal speakers, I think? I haven't done much research on it but I don't think they really said anything about it. The iPhone has a speaker so I'm assuming it does. (+0.5 iPod Touch +0.5 PSP)
  • I do like the neat features that D2's flash abilities can provide, that is always a plus, especially games for when I'm bored. =) (+1 D2 +1 PSP)
Now you might be a little confused as to why I included the PSP in there. I was talking to a friend about whether I should get D2 or the iPod Touch, and he suggested I should just get the PSP if I want the internet so badly, lol.

So what should I end up buying? iAudio D2 4GB now, PSP now, wait for iAudio D2, or wait for the iPod Touch?

Thanks.

If you want the internet, the ipod. The PSP shouldn't be included because it's not particularly portable, it's actually quite a brick. As a music player, the D2 would probably be the best, but like you said, audio quality isn't the #1 concern for you, so that's another notch for ipod. You can also use Media Monkey to work with ipod, instead of itunes. I don't have an ipod video, so I don't know how video works with itunes or media monkey.

Please tell me you're joking... lol.

iPod touch screens seem to be horrible compared to the iPhone's. ><
