Default We got Firmware V1.91 from Cowon!

In spite of the massive flow of new players, Cowon still releases firmware for our A2. The version we have our hands on now, bears the version number 1.91F. It has improvements on the MP3, MusicPack, text viewer and photo viewer fields. Certainly the big wish lists found in this forum are not shortened, but let's give it a try!

Just download your copy at:

http://download.cowon.com/data/C08/A2_V1_91.zip

I'm trying it out now.
First it did after upgrade was ask me to do a 'chkdsk /f'. Did so, but without any luck: the A2 doesn't see any of the files on it anymore. Hooked up to the pc the files are still there ok. So something messed up on the mbr/dir structure whatever.

Did a format of the A2, created folders MUSIC, MOVIES, PHOTO, RECORD and DOCUMENTS (think that is all), copied the 1.91F fw files to it and rebooted. No more requests for 'chkdsk /f', so should be ok.

Ironically, thanks to the --vbr-new problem, I've started re-ripping my entire collection to Ogg, so it's become less urgent for me. That being said, I still have a lot of downloaded MP3s that use --vbr-new, so it's certainly useful!

Great to hear about this! I'll have to try it out soon. Keep the reports coming!

I own the A2 for two weeks now and I was wondering why some of the files were not showing up in the music browser. Until I discovered - thanks to your fantastic forum - that vbr--new encoded files were not supported! This very morning, I was even ready to rip dozens of albums again!

I guess I can say that I'm one of a lucky ba...d!

Thanks COWON! Keep up the great job! And thanks iaudiophile.net!

For those viewing plain text files on their A2: this part of the player has now word-wrap. So no more interrupted words when they don't fit on the line. Although you get shorter lines from time to time, it reads much more comfortably this way.

I wonder what that DRM business is about. It would be cool to have WMV DRM available so I can rent movies. Not holding my breath though...

I had an interesting experience flashing the firmware. The only image that was shown while flashing the firmware was the status indicator.

firmware update worked fine. just don't panic if you see a wierd black screen with colored pixels. then a couple of large yellow dots appear. Let it run, takes about a full minute.

Default Latest firmware

I just updated my firmware, and when I go into Information I see:

Firmware Version 1.85F

Application Version 1.91F

Should I have updated to Firmware version 1.89 first before updating to 1.91, or it doesn't really matter?

Can I update to V.1.89 now, and then re-update to V 1.91, or should I just leave things as they are?

Thanks!

You don't put the firmware it in the system file, you put it in the root folder.

Here is the stickied thread that shows you how to do it: http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9167

P.S. i really wish my A2 was not stolen. There is a lot of exciting stuff going on right now with patches and new firmware.

Thanks, but I did put the firmware in my root folder! I have been successfully updating my firmware since v.1.39, so I know what I'm doing.

But in the past my Firmware version and Application version always matched.

I guess I'll try it again.
