They've ported Rockbox to it and it now supports Ogg, Flac, mpc, etc. The gapless playback is apparently functional with Ogg as well. Now the only thing holding me back is that internal battery... |

Well, there already has been iPod-Linux for a long time... and the iPod still sucks. :winker:
(But MusePack-playback, that's really awesome... I wish the X5 would be able to do that.)

Perhaps so but iPod Linux isn't as user-friendly as Rockbox. The internal battery and the fragility of the player are my only hesitations.

welp, I've done it...birthday's coming up and I got this puppy yesterday; the Rockbox firmware makes it sweet indeed. I would've never considered Apple for any other reason. (I choose not to brave the challenges that Linux presents...toiling to make hardware function is no fun, so I have a general distaste for it).

So how do you feel about it now, vinnie?
I've been considering a Nano w/ Rockbox as well. Had a U2, but I felt that the Ogg vorbis support was very poor - display problems, short battery life, and occasional cutoffs. The Nano (with Rockbox,) on the other hand, sports gapless playback (the only flash player I know of to do so!) but how's the battery life w/ Ogg vorbis files? Does the Nano's sound improve with the Rockbox firmware? I know a lot of people that have complained about the Nano's lack of bass. |

I'll have to get back to you on your questions...since the CPU runs at full speed on Rockbox right now, I think 8 hours is the max that people are getting (which is enough for me). The gapless playback is flawless. I didn't even listen to the Nano using Apple's stock firmware (although I think there's a way to boot into it with Rockbox installed), so I can't comment on sound quality differences. My Koss PortaPros are delivering enough bass and the user EQ is really nice (CPU-intensive, though). Those are initial thoughts...still need to spend some more time with it.

to boot back into the apples firmware, reboot the nano by toggling the hold switch on then off, next press and hold the menu and select buttons until it reboots. As soon as it starts to reboot, hold down the menu button until it says "loading original firmware"

I don't worry about it breaking. I worry about the gameplay because you have to press pretty ahrd on the joystick to register a right(the direction)press for me at least.
