Default Bricked? Help if you can please.

So I have an X7. I've been using it for a few months now.

It's been nothing but problems. The screen keeps losing calibration, which can only be corrected by re-updating the software, it crashes, battery is good sometimes and others it lasts a few minutes. It seems the only two good things about it are the storage capacity and sound quality. Although the too good things about it make it worth dealing with (almost).

Earlier today I went to go listen to some music. Tried to turn it on, and nothing. I didn't sweat it, just figure it was left on and the battery is dead. Well, now it's been plugged in to my computer for a few hours. It didn't show up in "My computer at first, so I tried another USB port, nothing. Different cable, nothing. Even another computer.

After trying everything I could think of (Including the reset button), I'm starting to fear I may have a new paper weight. When the unit was newer, I tried to contact Cowon for the screen issue. It feels like they try not to have their contact info available to the public. If anyone has an idea, please let me know. I need my only FLAC. ready device back!!

Thank you in advance for any help.

Sounds like, from all the previous problems, you had a bad one (to say the least!).

My first one bricked - there is a known issue with it doing that if the battery drains completely. Very poor product testing at Cowon, obviously. There are threads on here with various things to try to revive it but nothing worked for mine - it was less than 5 months old I think. I contacted the supplier (Amazon, in my case). They immediately offered a no questions asked replacement - then, when they realised they had no stock, a complete refund. I used it to buy another X7, which has been absolutely fine.

Try the tips elsewhere in this forum. If no luck, try your supplier.

Normally I'd try my suppler, but in this case I don't have one. It was gven to me by a friend after he realized it was a pain to use. He got another (Had a "3" in it's model name, could be a J3?) which was more user friendly.

I will try a few of the tricks from this site. If I have no luck I have an idea of my own. If it's caused by the battery going flat, I will try and open the case in order to charge the cell with an external charger.

Thank you for your reply, I will post here if anything works.

Oh well I guess if it was free, you have nothing to lose by experimenting on it! Good luck. If you get it working again, try install Kizune's GUIs on it - they make a lot of different to the useability.

It's back!

I can't believe it. I 100% expected it to be gone for good. I left it charging for a LONG time. Just check the dates of my posts, I plugged it in right away, and am able to post now right as it comes back to life.

Just so everyone knows what happened so they know what to expect with their own. I left it to charge via USB as I don't have an AC adapter. My computer was off, and it was in the (Always on) port of my laptop. This morning I awoke to it flashing the low battery icon on the screen. As of now I still haven't turned it on. I'm just being patient (So hard to do) and letting it do it's thing. As I was typing this post it has gone from the low battery icon to a blank screen, and when I press the power button it displays the "USB connected" icon. I am also able to see the two drives on my computer now.

Thank you so much for your help. If you hadn't told me about the battery, I think I would have missed that entirely and it would still be a paperweight. I have plans for today, but tonight I will try messing about with the GUI's as I hope to make this a better unit. If you want I can also post how that goes. The biggest problem is the left side of the screen losing its touch ability. That requires a firmware reinstall. Do you know if the software would correct that? As it seems not to be a hardware problem.

Anyway, than you again!

Best regards, William

Good news! Glad it helped. :-) yes, go for the firmware reinstall. Ther is a new firmware just released as well. Then recalibrate the screen and see if that helps. May still be that you have a bad x7. My screen is usually ok.

Mine bricked on me for the second time, this time day one of a 14 day cruise. Cowon fixed it the first time. This time Amazon is sending me a new one. I hope this one works as advertised.
