I formatted it with the MMC hd reader... it said 64 gb available when I start dragging stuff into the "g" drive. Success I think!.. anyway.. when i go onto my j3, the new files are now in a seperate folder called "J3 ext". I thought it was all supposed to go into one j3 folder? Is there a way?

No, there is not. The internal memory and the external memory are two separate drives.

If you browse the file system using folder view you have to browse the drives separately.

But if you browse using the metadata in tags, artist, album and so on, all files will be merged into one database, and the actual path will be ignored.

ah... thats what someone probably meant long ago. No meta tags for me.. Thats too much work... I guess this is okay though.

Do you think I did this the right way? I was told to get a sdxc 64gb capable reader...but this simple 2 dollar sd/sdhc/mmc reader seemed to format 64gb fine for me.

There are some utilities that will take the names of the folders an files to create metadata for you automatically. Works fine if you have a standard way of naming files and folders like artist/album/trackno - track. There even are some utilities that will check your files and figure out what album it is by checking the music and download metadata for you. I use MusicBrainz Picard.

A cheap simple card reader will be fine, no worries. If it works it works.

Im glad to have all my files uploaded now.. It takes a good 30 seconds to load up, but thats understandable. One weird thing is upon startup, it says "check external memory" Anyone know what that means?

It most likely means it is just checking the SD card. Just as when you drop new albums on (and or modify album art) it has a check for that, too. bear in mind that since the card is removable, it has to check out it contents on boot up (to update the database, in case you changed the card or its contents.

EXCELLENT!!!

There's just something not right with Windows and FAT32 > 32GB, when the removable drive is "connected directly". Somehow, going through an intermediate card read overcomes the problem and the drive is now seen and handled perfectly.

I think it's something about the USB card reader interface which is the "magic", but I don't really know or care. What's important is that you should simply always use the card reader for any type of maintenance to the contents of your new 64GB card. Period.

That's not a "separate folder". [J3 Ext] is the designation for "external card storage", as opposed to [J3] which is the designation for "internal card storage".

As was mentioned, you see this when you browse "physically", i.e. Library -> [Folders]. The next level down is [J3] (i.e. internal storage) or [J3 Ext] (i.e. external storage). From there on down you're then seeing the physical folder/file structure on either internal or external storage, exactly as if you were browsing your PC-connected J3 using Windows Explorer. Physical browsing is by definition your external named folder/file structure either (a) on internal storage or (b) on external storage. That's what "physical" means... internal or external storage, and external folder/file names.

In contrast, if your music files had valid tags (ID3 or FLAC), then you could brows "logically" through the Artists, Albums, Songs, Genres, or Years (i.e. through the tags database built by the J3 at boot time from the internal tag fields of each of your music files). This "logical" browse is NOT showing you external folder/file names, but rather is showing you the internal tag field values. Logical browsing includes ALL of your music files, no matter whether they are on internal or external storage... which obviously is a real advantage, since you don't actually have to know where these files are located. It's all just one giant tags database, built from all of your music files everywhere. It's your complete music collection, located on both internal and external storage. Of course you have to have valid tags in your music files to take advantage of "logical" browsing.

Note that at boot time, the J3 ALWAYS checks the complete folder/file contents of external storage, in order to update its tags database if necessary (as well as to update the 95x95 album art miniatures used for landscape-mode Matrix Browser if you're using the stock factory Cowon music interface).

That's what "checking external memory" means. The more folder/files you have on external storage, the longer that process will take (probably no more than 45 seconds absolute tops, and generally much less).

In contrast, the J3 somehow knows that you have or have not changed anything on internal storage. So the "checking internal memory" function (which isn't actually stated visually) is normally bypassed if nothing's changed on internal storage. It's only performed if something's changed.

That's why if you have no external card inserted, J3 boots typically only take a few seconds if nothing's changed on internal storage. But as long as you have an external card inserted, there is that mandatory "checking external memory" which lasts for a duration that's a function of the number of folders/files you have on external storage.

To each his own.

Without tags in your files, you are FORCED to browse "physically", which means you now need to know where all of your music files live... either on internal or external storage, and down in what folders/sub-folders. If you don't mind navigating this way, then you won't be bothered.

Many people prefer the "logical" browsing, being able to look for music by artist, album title, song title, genre, or year, regardless of whether the set of such music files are all in one physical folder or not, and regardless of whether the music files are on internal or external storage. They just want "The Beatles", wherever those music files might be. Without tags, you'll never be able to browse that way.

Yep, it seems to have worked fine.

These extended capacity SD cards (including the microSD physical form) are new, so whether or not an old card reader will be usable insofar as allowing FAT32 formatting of a 64GB card, well probably only experimenting will determine (and fingers crossed you don't do any physical damage to the card, if the card reader really can't be used for a 64GB card).

In your case, your $2 card reader seems to be perfectly usable. Excellent!

Yea, maybe "check external memory" is just bad english for "checking external memory"...
the first one tells me to do something, and the second just says that the j3 is doing something.
therefore, maybe "check album art" means "checking album art", which means now that theres nothing wrong with my art folder...

Exactly, this is the right explanation - it's just bad English.
