which format...youtube vs flac (j3)

ok here i go being a pain in the arse awkward fkr again

i have a whole bunch of youtube quality music vids, blondie, jilted john, the doors, all the great stuff from my life and beyond that i'd like to preserve.
the video quality is what it is, cant do much about that...but the audio :s
tv badly recorded onto vhs in 1970 doesnt sound so good atm :\

what would be the best format to use to get that video synced up with some flac quality audio?

i can work an editor but have no idea of the highest quality audio i can apply to a file via whatever formats and have it play on the j3.

obviously i dont want to lose any audio quality in the process (if possible) and wav audio would destroy my disk space.

any suggestions welcome.
