I just got my J3 today and it came with 3.21, I recently upgraded it to 3.26. It was purchased through a South Korean ebay dealer.
Apparently, there is no way to access MTP mode in the 3.xx versions, which is horrible for me since one of the main reasons I got this was for Scrobbling support through qtScrobbler and MTP mode. Is there ANY way to get MTP mode on 3.26, or preferably any way to go from 3.26 to 2.26? Are there any other alternatives to scrobbling a J3? |

On your Mainmenu, Press settings icon => then go to the bottom and press System => 6 rectangles down you can press the usb mode to be MTP. Take note that I'm a 2.26 user. You can actually switch easily to 2.26 from 3.26 but you'll lose the dmb.

No, you don't understand, USB mode is not available in 3.26 versions, I have absolutely no way to currently access MTP mode, that's why I'm looking for a way to go from 3.26 -> 2.26.

Just download the 2.26 files and place them in the root of your J3 device. Start up the J3 and it'll automatically update to 2.26, Simple as that. You'll lose DMB and/or dictionary though...

.bin right in your root right, not a zip file? You will need to extract the zip file and have the .bin (and some other two file) in your root. Others have easily switched from 3.xx to 2.xx (and even 1.xx, don't know why though..)
Check this thread out: http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=37960

3 .bin files, right. It's what I've been doing all along but nothing happens, no installation occurs when I go from 3.26 to 2.26. Do you know of anyone specifically who has??
From what I can tell in the thread you linked, there was no mention of being able to go from 3.xx to 2.xx, which is EXACTLY what I need to do to obtain MTP mode. |

But it definitely shows that there is no MTP support in 1.xx and 3.xx. This is consistent with the list of options you showed over on your ABI thread describing the output from your 3.26 J3 firmware, that gave Settings -> System and showed NO USB Mode in the list from 3.26. Obviously that item IS in the 2.26 Settings -> System list items. However it also states that you CAN install any firmware flavor onto a player that did not come with that flavor pre-installed. And of course, the standard method of installing ANY firmware version is described... namely: (1) unzip the downloaded firmware ZIP file to extract the three BIN files contained within (2) copy the three BIN files to the root of the J3 so that it looks like this: ![]() (3) since you are currently in MSC mode, you MUST "safely remove hardware", and when given the "it is now safe to remove hardware" message disconnect the USB cable from the PC (4) power-on the J3 and the new firmware files should be installed by the existing firmware. When it's complete the J3 will power itself off. When you then power it back on you should be running with the new firmware that just got installed. Just as one more fairly extreme approach, but it really can't do any harm (other than lose whatever data you might have placed on the J3 so far, but you can always re-copy later). Why not just FORMAT the J3 (both internal storage and external storage card if you have one) using the recommended SD Association Formatter Utility. This will "burn your J3 to the ground" and delete everything on the two drives. Next, copy those three BIN firmware files to the root of J3 internal storage. They will now be the only things on the drive. Then, "safely remove hardware", disconnect the USB cable, and power on the J3. The existing firmware will do two things: (1) recognize that there are no system folders/files on internal or external storage, and will recreate a complete set of default "starter" folders/files. There will be no factory-provided demonstration files, or videos or pictures or music, but the stock required folder/file structure will have been built for you. (2) recognize that there are new firmware files in the root, and install it. This is probably the method most likely to succeed, although the standard method presented earlier above should also work just fine. Last edited by DSperber; 09-03-2011 at 01:17.. |

I have already tried the first method you listed many times, especially when I had 3.21 instead of 3.26, but I'm moving my music folder right now and when it is done, I will try the format option. I've actually already formatted it once before but not exactly as you described in order. I don't use an SD card so I probably won't need that SD formatter you linked, just format straight from My Computer by right clicking, right?

You should still use that SD Association utility to do its format, even to J3 internal storage. Its the same type of storage as is used for external SD cards, and should be properly formatted by using this utility. Note that I really am not guaranteeing that this will solve your problem, and will indeed open the door to being able to change the "flavor" of firmware on your Korean J3 from 3.xx to 2.xx. I simply have my fingers crossed that formatting the J3 may produce success. Your best bet is still to contact CowonAmerica with the link information I provided previously, and ask for their assistance. They should be able to tell you that this is or is not possible, and then you can decide how you want to proceed. |

This is what it looks like, unformatted, with the 2.26 .bin files. Is this right?

I have already tried to register, twice, at Cowon America but they are sending me no emails that allows me to confirm my account, basically I can't even log in yet. I don't know if I want to format now and try this or wait for Cowon America to actually respond with me...I'm undecided as of this moment. Thank you for all your help, I hope things get resolved on my end soon. |

It didn't work. I am now convinced after too many tries that it is impossible to go from 3.xx to 2.xx. Thanks anyway.

i can backup that claim that the 3. cannot be overwritten by the 2.
it updates the firmware and leaves you with the same version. at least it did on my s9 when i tried the korean, in a failed attempt to enable dmb in the uk (frequencies were a go), but not realizing i'd bought an american market s9 without a bloody receiver built in. *sighs* i didnt try the bios repair tool on it, that may help. but i did rinse the player of data via windows before flashing the bios with 2. now im a lil wiser and the owner of a j3 but living in america where theres no fkn dmb *more sighs* not so bad i guess cos theres no good tv shows here anyways, tv here sucks massively. unbelievably i actually miss eastenders and the street, not to mention good comedy >< **wanted my dmb ** :*( Last edited by Enzyme; 09-29-2011 at 23:38.. |
