If some of you guys are still having a hard time with playlists on their X7, I have found out something else. The playlist will not be recognized (no file) if there are more than 400 songs. If you cut your playlists in smaller playlists of 400 songs max, it will work (using one of the various methods described above. I have asked Cowon if they could correct that in the next firmware because it is a pain in the ass...

Hello

This is my first Post here, on site. Also my first ownership re a Cowon X7

I hit the same problem whilst loading up my tracks onto this play ( simple copy ). Around 7700 tracks. My main player is Winamp, which is what I am used to.

Soo, the question of saved playlists etc came up. No way was Cowon recognising simple copy and paste of play lists. Whilst searching through the net, i found this site and duly went through the post.

My current location of files on main comp is
d:\Tracks

These were duly transferred on the Cowon drive and the path on it when connected to comp is
g:\Music\Tracks (g:\ drive etc will vary on other comps)

I then found all my winamp playlists and exporting them to desktop using a batch program written by Gabriel, located at
http://blog.thegabrielflores.com/200...in-winamp.html
[ Thanks Gabriel - Will be sending you some Beer Money ]

After they were exported , I opened each in Notepad ( Yup, it will be painful opening each list if you have lots - Perhaps someone could write a batch file ?? - Beyond my capabilities

Content of one of the list showing two tracks is shown below as an example

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:163,Psychic Ills - Go To The Radio
D:\Tracks\Psychic Ills\Mirror Eye (2009)\08 - Go To The Radio.ogg
#EXTINF:387,The Warlocks - So Paranoid
D:\Tracks\The Warlocks\Heavy Deavy Skull Lover (2007)\03 - So Paranoid.ogg

I then proceeded to change the paths to ie i REMOVED the drive location and the above then reads

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:163,Psychic Ills - Go To The Radio
Tracks\Psychic Ills\Mirror Eye (2009)\08 - Go To The Radio.ogg
#EXTINF:387,The Warlocks - So Paranoid
Tracks\The Warlocks\Heavy Deavy Skull Lover (2007)\03 - So Paranoid.ogg

[ This tip i learned after reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3U and the para within which was "example, in relative format. The M3U file is placed in the same directory as the music, and directories must be preserved when moving the playlist to another device if subdirectories are used. This method is more compatible as it doesn't rely on the file path staying the same" ]

I then proceeded to save the play lists in the directory named "Music" on the Cowon Hard drive which contained the directory of all my ogg files.

BUT PLEASE ENSURE that on saving the files , you save / encode it in UTF or UNICODE form ( I noticed that saving is in normal ANSI did not work in my case )

After that, I ejected the Cowon device, unplugged the USB lead. The cowon then iterated through the drive automatically , updated the metadata etc.

Now I have my play lists as they are on Winamp
These play list are all m3u form as per winamp

I hope this post will asist someone. Perhaps someone already has found a simpler alternative which I missed

Regards

PS

After posting this - I strutted off then came back and went through all the posts and dicovered JackBauer post - which has posted the same Doh .. oh well. I will in future, concentrate on reading more posts ..

Default I went back to Apple

I simply went back to Apple.........the experience with Cowon X7 was time consuming, frustrating, clunky, not sensitive.......just all around crazy to stay on board.
I just wanna plug in and listen or watch my device.
I want easy playlists, not this painstaking process.
Yeah I been through all the anti apple, windows phases, went back to it and left them again only to return.
I finally left my denial phase and understood, there is a reason why Apple is on top. Now I simply enjoy my crisp clear, easy to use functionality, frustrating free Ipod........yep...no longer in denial.
Good try Cowon but you gotta do better than this ancient device in todays market. Real users simply want a sleek friendly device to enjoy our time, its your job to make it that way.........not mine.

Hi - Yes, I totally understand. It is VERY CLUNKY. Unfortunately, almost all my music (95%) is in Ogg or Flac fromat. I Hence need for a player which would run these files. Sadly Apple, Sony etc are too narrow viewed to bother including support for such files. I do love their designs / interfaces etc.If they had supported such stuff - I think it would have been Bye Bye Cowan. Unlikely now that the next purchase will be Cowan ,,,

Default X7 and Playlists

I have had these problems too, Kyleclay, what you could do though is to allow X7 to finish syncing and then without unplugging, go to the drive that contains all your music-in x7(HDD)- and create the playlists there, then unplugg. Tell me if it works. In HDD, just right click "Playlists" and then choose "New Playlist", enter the name then drag and drop tracks to the list, stay below 400. Eject when you finish and allow it to update. Should work.
Sphinx.

Hi Sphinx - Unfortunately, I really do not want to got through process of creating new lists etc. My various playlist's have been composed over few years. Re-doing them will be a PAIN. In all fairness, Cowons interface is rather a throwback. Dont mind physical looks but , common, they really should have slicker software / interfaces. Why a 400 track limit on playlist for eg ? I seffer a reponse time lag ie pressing screen and it acting on commans. Sooo, jerky

For me, with a music player, sound quality is the over riding consideration. Hence I chose Cowon. The interface is a bit unintuitive (although much better with Sense) but the large capacity and fantastic sound quality more than make up for that (for me at least). Then again I know people who really don't care about sound quality too much, so we all have different priorities!

Yeah....I thought the sound quality was excellent but just not enough difference for me that was worth the trouble.......sound quality is my priority as well, this is why I bought a Cowon, however, OMG, it just wasn't worth my trouble.
I work in IT and when I get home.....well I just wanna relax and go into my own little world with no trouble or hassles, as much ease as possible.
Storage and sound was excellent, no question, and I did like ripping a few flac files onto it..........but, again, Cowon seems so far behind. I hope this company can take a great leap on the next model, no tellin what the next Ipod will be.
I left Ipod and went to, zune, then creative labs, then Cowon, and back to Ipod after the Cowon X7 fiasco.......it had me stressed out, the biggest purchase regret I had in a long time, i sold it for a loss and when I got the latest Ipod........well............it was evident why they were on top.
I cheer for Cowon to bring out a winner, because deep down I will always be anti establishment but not enough to not indulge for my own peace of mind.
Peace

Totally understand where you're coming from. It did amaze me how badly thought out the interface is, in a unit which retails at a premium price. I'm amazed they sell any!

No fan of Apple here either but my OH wanted a music player at xmas and knowing she was "technologically challenged" I bought her an ipod - she gets on well with it and I must admit I thought from an ease of use angle for people who don't want to have to fiddle about it was immaculately thought out.

The Sense UI makes a big difference to the front end but many users won't even go on the net and find out about these things.

Up until recently I had still been using a Creative Zen Xtra - prehistoric really but dead easy to use and great sound quality. The Cowon in many ways is a step up but maybe if I'd used more players over the years I'd be more critical of it and have given up on it too!

You can easily create playlists on the X7 using the Playlist Creator software. I copied all of the content from my J3 to my X7, including my playlists. Since then, I've also created new playlists successfully using the simple, but efficient Playlist Creator program. It's free and it works beautifully. All you do is put all the music you want to include in your playlists into your device's music and/or album folders. From the music and/or album folder, drag the music you want to use to build your playlist into the playlist. Name your playlist and hit Create Playlist. Make sure you save the playlist to the playlist folder on the X7. Here's a link to the program: http://www.oddgravity.de/news.php#latestnews1
