Default E2 Style over Substance? Quick review

I picked one of these up a couple of days ago as I was intrigued by the look and a couple of peoples' recommendations.

It is small and sleek - thinner and lighter than a Clip/+ although a little taller. I chose the pale blue from around 7 colours.

Loading it up was a breeze; in no time I had it full of lame vbr mp3s, as it was a little picky with wma. I didn't test FLAC or Ogg.

The user interface is pretty neat; the menu button brings up a choice - announced in a pleasant voice - of shuffle on or off, and 8 sound enhancements: Normal; BBE; BBE Viva; BBE Viva2: BBE Mach3Bass; BBE MP; BBE Headphone; BBE Headphone2; BBE Headphone3.

I find the shuffle function useful. I have 31 albums or folders on the player and if I press shuffle On and press forward, fairly soon I have the album I want; then I press shuffle off and I'm in that album. Tracks then play sequentially. Of course I can just shuffle everything. For me it's a reasonable workaround for not directly being able to select a folder.

The red power on off acts like a pause (there is no direct pause control), but it's a fairly instant boot-up a la Sony and works pretty well.

To me this player sounds as good as a Clip/+ but with much better EQ settings. Listening via my EX500s and IE8s I can find no complaint. How it compares to other Cowons I can't really comment except it doesn't offer the full EQ customisation of the i9 or S9 obviously.

I'm very satisfied - it's nice to have 500 or so tunes in such an elegant and well-constructed miniature DAP.

Edit: Cowon emailed the editor of abi today announcing a firmware upgrade which enables folder browsing in response to his review. It makes this an even better DAP.

I wish you resized your pics like this on ABI too, so they don't break the site layout.
