Hey all,
I just got a Cowon A3 secondhand recently which was set on Firmware 1.33Q. I've been reading through the FAQ and various posts and I've noticed that a few users (abyss x for instance) prefer to stick with an older firmware. Now I won't ask the standard 'What's the best firmware' question, as I'm sure it's been asked before and in most cases this probably differs depending on the type of codecs that you want to use. Instead (If it's not too much trouble) could some of the veteran posters write a firmware guide, even just a simple pro's and con's for some of the more popular firmware issues that could be stickied so that newbies (Such as myself) can get the most of the device for what they want to use it for. Me for instance I use it for anime, which means that I have a varied collection of videos that can vary from OGM to DiVx 3.11 and so on but have no real use for VOB playback as I'm comfortable with Memcoder and PocketDivxEncoder. Not trying to be the best.. It comes out naturally

Hello Dave, Grats of the almost-new A3..
I have 2 suggestions for u about FW's: The 1st is my favorite, which i always stick with it, 1.27P. I now have the Q vers. ( i cant see any diff. btw) but if u find the P vers. go with it. Nothing special to say about this FW, its just that for me, it is a bugs-free FW. The 2nd suggestion is 1.23A. I bet u heared of it alot from ppl who want to play their VOB's on the A3. 1.23 is best for the codecs issues that comes with the player.. I wont recommend what u're using now, 1.33Q. it has lots of bugs on that FW.. I upgraded mine from 1.15 to 1.27P and then sent my unit to repair. They gave it back with the 1.33Q inside (i dono y they upgraded my device..), and since then my device had some problems.. like getting stuck very often, or not running certain files.. So after a while i decided to downgrade it back to 1.27P, but the FW on their site was 1.27Q, so i satisfied with the Q.. =-) *end of story If u need any help finding those FW's u let me know.. i have them both (and maybe more) in my PC.

Thanks for the speedy response, you mentioned when you went to 1.33Q that you had problems running certain files? do you remember what files they were?
The only problems I've had so far are: - No video displayed on MP4 containers with H.264 (Although both videos I tried are a high bitrate) - OGM file that subs were not detected on (Although I read about having to extract subs) - Some H264 encoded videos performing slow (In AVI containers) I think all them are standard issues, or were there other issues that you had? |

Look, all the issues that u've mentioned here r normal issues on the A3 (its a shame to call it a normal issue, since we're talking about a heavy-duty PMP ). About my issues, it happened in some random files, (regular AVI's), not on some high-bitrate movies...
If u look deeper in those forums u'll be convinced that the 1.33 isnt trust worthy. Still, my suggestions r 1.27 or 1.23. Hope i helped enough. Abyss X
