How-To Recover your Bricked C2 using Tcctool

For people who use MAC or any user that bricked your own C2, this tutorial will help you.

All congrats and credits must go to users joecool and WAI

Step by Step tutorial:

1. Get a PC with Windows Vista or 7
2. Download TCCTOOL (http://www.mediafire.com/?cgl5glc3q0pvrc2)
3. Download the latest C2 firmware
4. Boot Windows like down:

[Note for Windows Vista and Windows 7 users] i have found out that tcctool doesn't work and is unable to find the J3 while accepting to use Tcctool for Unbricking your J3. reboot PC and hit F8 before Vista or Win. 7 boot logo appears. There will be several options. Select [Disable driver signature enforcement] and that should allow you to use Tcctool. You'll have to do this step everytime if you want to use Tcctool though

5. Follow this tutorial in .pdf (http://www.mediafire.com/?bdvtd8jm24qhrph)
6. After the updated driver software done successfull, put the COWON_C2_FW.bin into TCCTOOL folder (same place where tcctool.exe is)
7. Type the command: tcctool -d cowons9 COWON_C2_FW.BIN
7.1 You must see this lines:

[INFO] Using device "Cowon S9"
[INFO] Searching for TCC device...
[INFO] Found TCC device, uploading application.
[INFO] Patching application uploaded successfully!

8. After that your bricked C2 will turn it ON and be recognized as a drive in Windows.
9. Now, copy all 3 files from .zip C2 firmware to root C2 directory (just like to update the firmware process)
10. All 3 files into the C2, disconnect the USB Cabe, connect again and do step 7, but this time on the end of the process, remove safelly the C2, turn it on and DONE!!! =)

I dont know if the C2 used the same chip, but I tried with cowonj3 and cowons9small variables and, with cowonj3 it turn it on, but didnt work and with cowons9small it didnt work.

For information to all, my player still working fine and today will try to make it user friendly with Mac OS X.

This works! Although, I must mention some aspects that have been overlooked:
I remember as critical for Windows 7 before performing the procedure, reboot the PC using f8, as mentioned by the tutorial and follow that instructions. This lets you install drivers from Tcctool.
As a fundamental point, no one has mentioned how to start the Cowon C2 as "boot mode". After several trial and error, I discovered that the procedure is: Hold down the "+ and -" and while held down, connect the device to the USB port.
The first point is that you download the firmware, and then rename the file "COWON_C2_FW.bin" to "cowon_s9_fw.bin" for the Tcctool recognize the file as valid. In fact, we are fooling the program into believing that we are using a Cowon S9, because this version of Tcctool still does not recognize as valid device the Cowon C2.
The second important step is that the correct command to unbrick is "tcctool -d cowons9 cowon_s9_fw.bin" obviously without quotes, not "tcctool -d cowon_s9_fw.bin" as shown in the tutorial.
Once entered this command, the device is recognized by the Tcctool, and proceeds to unbrick.
After a few seconds, the device is recognized by the PC as external disk, and then you have to transfer the two remaining firmware files to the root of C2. Finally, disconnect the device and restart it, so that it can make the final upgrade.

Ok guys... some news...

Today I bricked again my C2 but this time using a Windows machine. The C2 simply stopped to work after "Updating Database".

So, I tried all the process above in a Windows 7 machine without any installation like the tutorial said. Just downloaded TCCTOOL and the firmware files and did step 7... and it worked like a charm.

BTW, in mac using Clean My Mac I didnt have any trouble anymore... and now I am just waiting to Cowon launch a new stable firmware.

Thanks. Worked a treat. I did lose all my data though - after the rescue boot (before the firmware reinstall), my Music folder was empty...

I think my C2 is already bricked,and I'm used windows XP SP 3,and I don't know why the TCCTOL can't run in XP,actually I've been do all the requirement for "run the TCCTOOL on win. XP" but still result NULL,how to run TCCTOOL on Win. XP?anybody can help me here..

I can try to help you, but first I need to know what steps you did to install TccTool

Okay..thanks before man..

I've try to install TCCTOOL from this way : "Go into Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager, then
click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers, look for something like
"Telechips TCC77x VTC USB Driver", right-click on it and select
Uninstall." I think it's working but still can't run TCCTOOL.

And I've try to "Disable driver signature enforcement" by desabled code signing for driver device and still can't run TCCTOOL.

And I've been check the compatibillity to windows 2000,but still not working.

And I've try to restart my computer and press F8 to try "Disable driver signature enforcement" but there's no option to disable driver signature..

I've been try everything to make TCCTOOL run on Win. XP but still dead end.

I think that's all,I hope it can assist you to help me,mate..

In the end I've try in CMD wizard the result is like this :
"'c:\tcctool' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file."

So Bricking the c2 is not uncommon and, as I found out earlier, very easy to do. I simply plugged in my usb cable (already connected to my pc) and, Ta Da...one bricked C2!

By following this tutorial, I am now reloading all my music on a once again happy player.

well, for the second time in one week the c2 hit me in the face, so i'm a bit dissapointed about its reliability right now... i hope the firmware updates WILL SoLVE the stability issue

interestingly enough, this second time i also tried to revive my cowon on a win7 pc, the same used for the first operation. but no matter what i did, it never recognized the Unknown Device, so i couldn't update the driver

after much frustration i plugged the stuff into a netbook running on good ol' XP, and i was able to do the procedure as describet up there.

it's starting to be too much deja vu for me...

This works great! Only issue is that my keyboard on-screen is only korean no matter which system language, any ideas?

after mine was unbricked it came back in korean.
goto system settings, top right quadrant (display), top left quadrant on next screen and it should bring the language choice up.
