Default O2 screen software problems bizarre

When i first got my o2, i tried playing the test videos, and immediately i noticed something funny, the screen would flash black for a second and this weird digital noise would appear (like static on a vcr tape) and then the video would play fine.

well earlier today i was playing music and suddenly it turned off, i thought maybe the battery was dead, but that seemed strange. anyway i plugged it in to charge, and when i turned it back on, a solid band had appeared on my background of static, and the background i had, was now completely black (altohugh you could still see a little of it).

i hooked it up to my computer and went to go delete some of the picture files, i dont know why, i guess just to check and see if maybe something was wrong with them, when i deleted one file, a whole slew of files dissapeared, and a ton of my files were missing anyway, music, vids, ALL of my pictures. etc.

unhooked it, turned it back on, and this is what the screen looks like now...

before and after pics

before

and now, how it looks

interestingly, the gui still works fine, i just cant read anything, and obviously dont want to use it.

i filled out an RMA just now.

anyone else have any kind of problem like this?

Have you tried to re-install the firmware?

run a scan disk and then re-load the newest firmware. That should fix this problem. It's simple file corruption. Your background image is corrupted. To check that this is right, go to the settings and then uncheck "use background picture"

a few things...

i removed the background picture and it looks to be back to normal, but i have some questions.

a) what do you mean run a scan disk?

and

b) how would my background image get corrupted, and why would that cause a lot of my files to dissapear?

What happened was that the file got corrupted for some reason. Maybe a file transfer failed/didn't complete or you didn't safely disconnect the O2 or something like that or maybe your computer crashed/failed/attacked by viruses while you used the O2.

Any of these could lead to a file corruption which can spread to other files on the affected circuit (the O2 is flash memory, not a hard-drive and so nothing about sectors applies).

To run a scan disk, connect the O2 to the computer, right click, go to properties and then the tools tab, you should see scan now. Perform this scan disk on your O2. ALternatively you can load the newest firmware which has a scan-disk file. and then it should either automatically run a scan disk when you connect it to the computer or you might still have to manually do it. These instructions are for windows but if oyu have a MAC or run linux I'm sure google can help you find out how to scan disks wiht these OS's. If you still do not undertand anything feel free to ask some more.

BTW, after you run the scan-disk you can proceed to use the O2 as normal without any problems and even put again that background image you used before. Do not forget to update to the newest firmware.

hey, thanks a ton for the help!

you were infinitely more helpful than cowon. the advice i got from them (supplying them with the same information) was...

"did you try resetting it?"

and

"fill out an RMA"
