Good to see this post. I decided I was going to start the same thread as soon as I got my settings figured out, but I'm still not decided on a general listening scheme, although this one did sound nice:

I use a pair of Shure SE530's so I don't overdo the EQing, if you use less isolated headphones you will probably need to boost the lower end and lower midrange frequencies to preference, as well as increasing the BBE setting. I adopted these from my D2 and still need to tweak as it certainly sounds different. I will post some more once I got everything exactly the way I want it...

80Hz (normal): 5 (from wide to normal to really just boost the warmth/deepness of the sound, otherwise it was a tad boomy)
300Hz (wide): 3 (upped the frequency to get a little less depth punch/bit more solid instrumental sounds)
780Hz (wide): 3
3.0kHz(wide): 3
13kHz (wide): 5 (lower this frequency range for more apparent voices/less brightness)

BBE: 1
Mach3Bass: 2
3D Surround: 3
MP Enhance: OFF
STE: OFF

Oh, my 'general listening' is mostly anything from classical to blues to rock to metal, mostly having lots of instruments/acoustics.

Just got my s9 and have been fiddling with the settings using a pair of Sleek Audio SA6's with bass+ and treble++ ports.

EQ
+2...80Hz......Narrow
+3...500Hz....Wide
+3...1.4kHz...Wide
+5...3.0kHz...Wide
+6...11.7kHz..Narrow

Just for some perspective this is the frequency response of SA6 (http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID%5B%5D=693) with neutral ports, so you can kind of see what i was trying to do.

BBE+
BBE: 4
Mach3Bass: 2
3D surround: 1
MP Enhance: on

STE: off

I don't have any real particular taste in music so it's a combination of everything altrock, classical, film scores, blues, etc. I suppose one underlying characteristic of the music I like is they usually tend to have nice group or solo instrumentals.

I use the Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5 Pro earbuds and these EQ settings:

BBE = 10
MachBass = 10

80Hz = 12 (Wide)
220Hz = 4 (Normal)
780Hz = 0 (Normal) / 1.1Khz Wide (deciding)
4.1Khz = 6 (Normal)
13KHz = 12 (Normal)

Still playing around with the sound so this may change.

Ouch, lots of smiley curves. I try to aim for a neutral sound:

Grado SR-325i -- low bass boost, treble cut. It's a great headphone after correction, but the fact that it needs it kind of sucks.

80Hz +3 normal
[... the stuff in between is zero'ed out ...]
3KHz -1 wide
13KHz -3 wide

Etymotic ER-4p -- heavy bass boost, wider band... having "big bass" on this thing is kind of a lost cause though.

80Hz +5 wide
(the rest zeroed out)

BBE is off unless I'm (say) connecting to a crappy car stereo, then I crank it up. BBE's original purpose was time/phase compensation for bad stereos, pickups/mics, amps and PAs, so...

I listen to anything from Radiohead to full on extreme hardcore metal [devil]

I also have one of those Fiio E5's however the added hiss with the Shure's puts me off using it. If I do eventually decide to use it then I'd recommend turning the 80Hz down to 5 or 4.

One thing I have noticed is a certain... hrrmm the only word I can think of is "shrillness" with some singing stuff. What would cause this?

Question:
Is there any difference between EQs with the same relative levels, but all on a higher or lower level.

Ex:
4 1 3 6 8

as opposed to

0 -3 -1 2 4

And is this the same with and without BBE+ effects?

I ask this because I have sensitive hearing, and often times the lowest volume level is higher than I would like it to be.

Renzu
05-16-2009, 03:50
Magnnus: it's hard to say without knowing exactly how the EQ works and what the number values mean. If the number values correspond to decibels, and the highest and lowest Hz bands are shelf (as opposed to parametric) EQs, then the two set of values you give would produce the same sound aside from the difference in gain. It'd also be the same with BBE effects.

I don't know what kind of headroom the S9 leaves for processing. I wonder if you can digitally clip the signal with high enough EQ values.

...but anyway I wouldn't sweat those kind of details, since setting the S9 EQ is already such an unscientific, taste-driven process. Even if the number values correspond to linear gain (%) as opposed to logarithmic (dB), the difference shouldn't be that drastic and you can always just correct by ear. If the lowest lows and the highest highs sound different, I'd change the first and last bands from "normal" to "wide" (if it's due to the fact that they're parametric and not fully covering those ranges)

Magnnus, there is a difference in the settings. Think of a flat line (ideally) between 20Hz and 20kHz. When you alter the EQ (level up or down) you are grabbing a point on that line (at the specified frequency) and dragging it up or down. The tonal balance will be different between your settings.

Somebody asked earlier about the "wide" and "narrow" settings. These should be a Q (quality factor) setting. When you boost or cut at a frequency you change the response from a flat line to a parabola. The Q setting (wide or narrow) determines the shape of the parabola, wider or narrower.

Sound quality is pretty subjective. I played around with the settings and prefer flat (no EQ) or just +1 or +2 at 80Hz. The level of detail from the S9 impresses me and I find that adding any of the BBE settings just takes the sound further away from my audiophile aspirations...

ohh yeah, I'm using Sony "Studio Grade" MDREX85LP/B ear buds. They're relatively inexpensive but sound good.

MAN how do some of you people put mach3bass and bbe at 10+? by then, the clicking sound gets so loud it hurts. Not to mention the bass would blow my ears off.. haha

I try to get good bass and treble at the same time. I listen to mostly of Hip Hop/R&B so BBE+ clears up and then the Hip Hop setting gives the music a good punch of lows and mids..

80 Hz - +10

now I'm using the Ultimate ears studio 3...
I'm aiming for either the super fi 5.0 pro or the 5.0 EB.. what do guys recommend... I wanna have full thumping bass... and yet get full detailed sound.. plz advise me...

anyways.. I've been playing with the EQ for a long time now... and I think I got to a good EQ settings for the ULTIMATE EARS STUDIO 3.0... but you have to consider the whole setup for this to work:
- NUFORCE icon mobile amplifier
- UE studio 3.0
- COMPLY foam buds

so here's the setup:

13khz....12... normal
4.1khz.... 3....normal
780hz.... -1.... narrow
500hz....1 0r 2....narrow
80hz.....7....wide for fuller bass
BBE+....2
Mach....10 gives you full range bass.... you can use lower setting.. but I love bass :S

I listen to all kinds of music... Drums n Bass, Dance, Techno, Pop, Classical, metal, heavy metal, gothic metal etc... newage you name it..

hope you guys like it :)

I listen to a lot of rock, basically all sub-genres, and use the Ultimate Ears SF3 Studio.

105 Hz - - - - 5 - - - - Normal
220 Hz - - - - 5 - - - - Normal
780 Hz - - - - 2 - - - - Wide

13 kHz - - - - 3 - - - - Wide

BBE: Off
Mach3Bass: Off

I use that mainly because it makes the music sound more free and acoustic, the UE have such a flat response that they sound good with almost any EQ setup, so I worked instead on improving the soundstage.

Ok, but what does clicking on each one of the 5 individual yellow things and moving each one up or down do, how does it change the sounds, what does increasing/decreasing the Hz for each bar do to the sound, how do the wide, narrow, normal settings for each bar affect the sound. How do the BBE levels affect the sound, how do the Mach3Bass levels affect the sound, how do the 3DSound levels affect the sound? This would be nice to know.

the five "yellow things" are bands on an equalizer. raising or lowering them will increase or decrease the emphasis on that particular part of the sound spectrum - from left to right, you've got low, low-mid, mid, high-mid, and high frequencies. you can roughly think of this as bass on the left and treble on the right, although it's honestly a lot more complicated than that...

raising or lowering the Hz rating for each band will change the center position for that band, meaning that you're affecting frequencies that are either higher or lower than the default center when you increase or decrease the gain. this doesn't have any effect on the sound by itself, but it determines how changing the gain for each channel will affect the sound. changing the width for each band determines the range of frequencies affected by the slider. this is pretty advanced stuff - for just learning how different equalization changes your sound quality, I recommend keeping both of these settings at their default value.

I honestly can't quantify the effects of BBE, as I'm just not sure what it does other than "make things sound good". Mach3Bass increases bass response, and 3D sound artificially increases the stereo spread and mimics surround sound, just like similar settings on two channel stereo systems (or many modern televisions).

I hope that helps...but honestly, playing with the settings yourself is your best option, short of doing some heavy reading on EQ!

glad I could help. the EQ on the S9 is amazingly robust - moreso than any other PMP I've tried, hell, moreso than any media software I've tried. it's a five band semi-parametric equalizer with a fixed bandwidth, which gives you incredibly precise control. this is great news for those who love to tweak, but it can be incredibly frustrating for those who don't really understand the art and science of equalizing.

I'd recommend leaving the center and the width for each band alone while you're fiddling around - changing either or both can create false positives. for example, if you move the center for your low band as high as it will go, and then set it to maximum width, moving the slider will affect frequencies which are also controlled by your low-mid band.

I run live sound and do recording and mixing for a living, and I'm more than happy to answer questions or give tips if anyone wants to PM me...probably best not to clutter this thread up too much.

Hey guys, this is my Eq setting using Sony MDR BX 500's. I wanted an EQ that was clear and had a great punch for bass without the muddy distortion plagued by most EQ's centered around bass. Hope you guys like it!

The MP Enhance function, I find odd, so tend to have it off.

The reason? Well, even on FLAC files, which are 100% transparent, it does something to the sound, and yet, the setting is there to enhance what was lost in compression, yet, in a FLAC, nothing is lost, and yet, it still tries to enhance it, but I'm still wondering if it sounds warmer with better more spaced mids.

I use PX-100's:

80hz - (wide) - 3
220hz (wide) - 2
780hz (wide) - 0
3khz (wide) - 3
13khz (wide) - 5

BBE - 10
Mach3Bass - 10
3D surround - Off (does add some warmth however)
MP Enhance - Off (Though it seems to add some clarity to the mids, even to FLAC files, so may switch this on from now on)

Stereo Enhance - Off (Seems to work, but don't really use it, as it doesn't add that much, that is noticable anyway)
Reverb - Off (3D surround when on is sufficent at below 5 in my opinion for this type of effect, without this being needed)

I'm still messing with the BBE settings, wondering if having them lower would be better, but I do like Bass, and the PX-100's like bass too :p

If I move the BBE down now from 10, now I'm used to it, the music sounds duller, so I just have it left at 10.

had my Cowon S9 16G for a month already and after doing some tweaking with the JetEffect setting, this setting suits me most; am using Philips SHE9859 and Sony MDR-EX300 (not the best phones around but quite adequate for me) with same settings

EQ
80hz - 4 (i noted that setting this to a higher value makes the lows more muddy; i find it better to set the M3bass to a higher level if you like more bass)
300hz - 1
780hz - 0 (i just like the sound of smiley frequency curves)
4.1khz - 5
13khz - 12 (if there was a level 15, i'd probably set it to that)

BBE+
BBE - 10 (may sound artificial in some songs but really enhances the overall sound, especially the mids and the highs)
M3Bass - 8
3d - 1 (too much distortion at a higher value but may sound good with vocals)
MPEnhance - On

SE
Stereo enhance - Off (doesn't do much)
Reverb - Off (try experimenting but i really dont like this feature)

I listen mostly to Jazz and New Age (Instrumental) music and i like to put more emphasis on the high and the low frequencies. In the end, it all depends on your ears. Happy listening

@ merro

I have the Shure shr440's. Not the 840's, but I've read they are similar in terms of sound. I've experimented a bit, here's what I got so far. I look for a balanced sound, strong bass, but not overwhelming. Clear mids, crisp but not 'shimmery' highs.

Listen mainly to rock. Pearl Jam, Dave Mathews, the Hip, Alexisonfire etc....

Dont get scared away by the Reverb part guys! The reverb is what adds a totally sweet feel to this....im no sound enginner but it sounds alot like a recording studio to/ a live preformance for 1 person. The listener. It sounds absoultly amazing and i use it for almost all of my music....i dont like to use it as much with rap, hip-hop,+ but rock and pop really really nicely stand out in this. Keep in mind that this dosent work for every song and some songs just have WAY to much reverb in them, so allways keep a user 2 handy. ;) But would suggest to all to atleast try it and let me know what they think. :)

My headphones- SHURE SE102MPA (Nothing to exciting...) But I LOVE THEM TO DEATH! Would def suggest if your in the market for "in ear". :P Let me know what you guys think!

normal/normal/normal/narrow/narrow

bbe 10 / mach3 5 / 3d 1 / mp on

This usually goes well for all the mid-range IEMs (like Sennheiser cx500)

Flacvest & Junglepimp's "Mid-Range Clarity V1.0":

5/4/5/6/9
80/220/780/2.4/13
w/w/w/n/no
7/0/0/1/0/0

It's a combo of semi-crisp (no sparkle) bass and crystal clear vocals, more like an advancement to the preset ROCK.

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some great settings for rock music, with other genres i have no problems.
The rock music is trapped in a dull, bassy sound swamp. You can always get across to the heights with the equalizer setting, but the middles are still overlaid by the bass sound. Tremendous guitar riffs sound with these earphones harmless :(

Try this and tell me what results you get:

5/4/5/6/9
80/220/780/2.4/13
w/w/w/w/w
7/0/0/1/0/0

Le' Bump.:D

Hi, I'm new to the forums. So far, I've been messing with the EQ (2 days to be exact) and I can't still seem to get the best settings for my ears. Every time I turn up a knob on one of these 5 bands, some aspects of the sound get muffled. I usually listen to oldies, classic rock, pop, jazz, classical and electronic music.

I must admit, the EQ is very flexible, but I am not that well-versed in equalizing frequencies just yet. So far, my current settings are as follows:

EQ

-4 / -2 / -2 / -4 / -5
80 / 220 / 780 / 3.0 / 13
All wide

BBE+

BBE - 6
Mach3Bass - 2
3D Surround - 2
MP Enhance - Off

STE

Stereo Enhance - 3
Reverb - Off

The sound is good for now, but I want something that is more focused on the vocals/midrange and less harsh on the treble. Bass shouldn't overpower yet presence should be felt.

I use an AKG K518 DJ and Sennheiser HD 238 Precision.:)

I found my EQ works fine for every song I play. Probably works for ES530 only which is what I am using. Here it is:

80 Hz +6 Narrow
220 Hz +3 Wide
1.4 KHz -2 Normal
4.1 KHz +3 Normal
13 KHz +8 Normal

Mach3bass = 1

I think a parametric EQ like the S9's is intended to correct a few bad frequencies in the headphones. It's really not meant to do a graphic EQ's job - just my 2 cents please don't flame me.

When I boost or lower a certain frequency, sometimes other instruments/voices don't sound right, like the pitch has changed or something.

that's endemic to the equalization process.

an equalizer is just a very focused and targeted gain control, that allows you to boost or decrease the gain within certain frequency bands. some frequencies are more present to the ear by nature - which frequencies tends to depend on the individual's ear, but everyone's ear is going to naturally react stronger to some bands than others.

hence, when you boost one band of frequencies, another is naturally going to sound quieter or altered. the difference will depend on a lot of factors, but most significantly on your ear, your equipment, and how much of a change you're making to the equalizer.

the most dominant frequencies for most people tend to be the low and low-mid range. boosting them will generally have a noticeable effect on the mid and mid-high range. I'm a bass head myself, when I'm listening for pleasure rather than work, so I pump the hell out of the low end. just keep in mind that most headphones are also built to give a bump to the low end, so if you're losing clarity in the mid range, you can drop your low end gain a bit without sacrificing too much.

We can't really define 'good enough' in any other way except, if it sounds good enough, it is good enough. That being said we mustn't overshadow the fact that there is always some room for improvement as far as the EQ settings go. Basically as you keep listening to the EQ settings that you have, and keep trying out new EQ settings, you'll realize what your needs are, and keep pursuing perfection :) As for movies, to be honest you won't really realize which EQ setting you are using while watching a movie. Do let me know if you meant something else by 'good enough' btw!

Wow, you guys are oversampling too much. I couldn't bear the sound of an EQ setting with bands exceeding +3 dB due to increased chances of distortion or crackling. My headphones pick up the tiniest of nuances, so overdoing it is straining for the drivers and my ears.

I'm curious if there happens to be anyone else out there who listens to metal with UE TripleFi 10 headphones and what kind of Jet Effect EQ settings they have. I currently use the following setup:

80 Hz: 11 normal
220 Hz: 6 normal
780 Hz: 1 normal
3.0 kHz: 6 normal
13 kHz: 11 normal (I've been tinkering with 'wide' here because the sound is clearer, but at times the treble gets too high for my taste)
BBE: 5-7 (depending on recording quality)
Mach3Bass: 5-7
3DSurround: off
MP Enhance: on
Stereo Enhance: 3
Reverb: off

I'm sure that a few tweaks here and there would perfect the sound; then again, perhaps it needs to be more radically changed to suit metal music.
I'd be grateful for any input.

I'm waiting on some (better?) Audio Tecnica buds, but these $8 stock buds have surprising (for the price) sound with the EQ. Not at all experienced and still tweaking, but this is what I've come up with so far:
80Hz/8/wide
220Hz/2/normal
&80 Hz/8/wide
3.0kHz/7/wide
13 kHz/10/wide

BBE: 4
Mach3Bass: 4
#D surround: 6
MP Enhance: On

Stereo enhance: 3
Reverbd: Off

This using Sennheizer CX 95 and listening to a lot of Fatboy Slim, Moby, othet techno and dance and (mainly underground) rap. Also listen to some normal rock, but got some other settings for that. Anyone sugestions?

Like it SS - never occurred to me to give BBE & Mach parity and whacking up the 3D Surround. Not too harsh and tiring on my IEMs. Will load some Fatboy to follow it through, and tweak to see if can improve.

Best wishes, SteveO

makes it sound SO much clearer instead of the muddy bass, i used the frequency graph on headphone as as starting point to flatten it out, it's pretty flat right now (without BBE etc) but i'll make adjustments during my daily 3 mile walks. I'll be getting in the Full Metal Jackets (FMJ) 11mm non-iphone tomorrow, depending on how the snowstorm hits us today. From what I read online about the FMJ's, the driver is larger (11mm opposed to 10mm on the Titans) and it's suppose to have a ridiculous amount of bass so imma have fun with those XD

I use IEM Sleek Audio S6 with treble tips "-" and without bass ports ("++"). The sound turns out very sated (accurate bass, the firm middle and bright treble).I listen mainly Deathcore, MDM, Metalcore, Prog and Power Metal Etc.But these options as will approach and for instrumental music. Very well approach for AKG k-44 v2.
Excuse for my bad English =)

edit: after 100hrs burn-in time I prefer no eq at all now. They seemed to have fixed themselves!
---

Here's my ultimate Sennheiser IE8 EQ:

0/-1/0/0/0
105/300/1.1/2.4/9
nor/nor/wide/nor/nor

BBE: Off / Mach3Bass: Off / 3D Surround: Off
MP Enhance: On / Stereo Enhance: 2 / Reverb: Off

This EQ removes the mid-bass hump and no longer makes everything sound veiled/dark. In other words my music sounds PERFECT!! Every song, every genre. This is how the IE8 should have sounded. [thumbsup]

Play a song on 'Normal' preset and switch to this EQ and you should notice a much improved sound while still keeping everything natural sounding.

This EQ explained:

0/-1/0/0/0
-The '-1' band will remove the infamous IE8 mid-bass hump. No other band needs its frequency added or cut because of how accurate the IE8 is.

105/300/1.1/2.4/9
nor/nor/wide/nor/nor
-I spent many hours/several days getting the frequencies and band ranges right. This is probably the most important part of the EQ as it really tightens the bass up and makes everything sound the way it should.

Stereo enhance: 2 - Add anything more and you will lose sonic qualities.
3D: Off - Adding 3D will make it sound un-natural.
BBE: Off - Adding BBE will make it sound un-natural.
Mach3bass: Off - IE8 is already a bass-heavy IEM - no need to add more!
MP Enhance: On - Brings everything to life.

Now I love the sound of my IE8! :D SO glad I have the S9 to be able to tweak the sound this way.

My set-up: medium stock tips, bass tuner at lowest setting, worn down for improved bass (maybe it's just my ears but I discovered music sounds better with the IE8 worn downwards instead of up), 60-70hrs approx burn-in.

Because of my tendency to buy high-end headphones, listening to music at school or outside in general has become a pretty bad fear for me. My Denons are too big and I'm always worried they're gonna break. My EW9's are made of that precious cherry wood, and breaking that would be terrible.

So I've decided to just fling on a pair of the stock Cowon earbuds for outside use. Of course, they're stock earbuds, they suck, but...

the S9 is truly amazing.

Can someone post some EQ settings for the Sennheiser CX 300 II? I mostly listen to underground rap/hip-hop (bass heavy), but I also listen to older rock and some obscure music.

9/8/off/on/5/off

Since the EQ setting website: http://thenakedlife.com/special-cowon-s9-eq-settings/ is gone [sad], I was wondering if anyone had them saved or know an alternate site where it's posted.

I saw JunglePimp's sig and all, but it seems like there's less than there were before.

If not, I'd like to request for a setting for the 'Monster Turbines' (I received them as a gift, and they're just an easier convenience for me). I listen to K-pop mostly. I wouldn't say it's bass heavy, but I would like it to be stronger than usual. (I just have it at the default settings as I'm afraid to mess/distort my music).

Thanks.

Ah.. sorry I deleted the website files by mistake.. and the recovery cost was a little high. The link in my sig is only missing one EQ, which I don't exactly remember but it was surely something along the lines of this EQ:

10/1/5/8/10
80/220/1.4/4.1/11.7

10/10/3/on/6/1

JunglePimp, you do not have to apologize for anything. You've been helpful with all this stuff and you don't get anything in return except thanks.

The reason I liked the site was because you actually named them according to the preferences. (Though I don't remember what the exact names were).

I'm currently using this one:
7/10/4/1/12
80/220/650/1.8/11.7
na/w/w/n/na
10/8/8/1/6/2
Cowon S9 BBE+ The Perfect BASShead EQ

But is there any setting that you think would be better for the Monster Turbines? I think they're pretty good. What is your opinion? I would get some headphones but they are inconvenient when I'm going to class.

Like before, I don't want super bass heavy, but a bit more than the average setting. It's mostly (K)Pop and Electronica.

Thanks so much in advanced for this!

EDIT: I don't even like this EQ anymore... too dark sounding I think. Try the one below it, I think it's better.

Just when I thought I couldn't improve the IE8 sound anymore... I present my 4th EQ.

-7/0/0/0/0
105/300/1.4/2.4/13
wide/norm/norm/wide/wide

bbe: off / mach3bass: 3 / 3d: off / mp enhance: on
stereo: off / reverb: off

bass knob set to 3 (VERY important for best clarity)

This EQ is for a balanced sound with warmth and stong bass rumble/extension. It removes the ugly midbass hump that was still present in my previous EQ's.

I'm not sure but it seems like my IE8 have 'burnt-out'... yes, there's the burn-in phenomenon with 'phones but how about burn-out with the IE8's it would seem! It's like they get duller sounding by the week... maybe that's why I feel the need to make a new EQ every month or so?

Variables: medium stock tips / worn over ear / approx 500hrs use
---
and with that, I present a 5th EQ...

-7/0/0/0/0
105/300/1.4/2.4/13
wide/nar/nar/norm/wide

bbe: off / mach3bass: 3 / 3d: 2 / mp enhance: on
stereo: 3 / reverb: off

bass knob set to about 2.2 (VERY important for best clarity - even the slightest change could affect the whole sound!)

This EQ is amazing in that it actually makes everything sound live! It gives great treble energy and a huge soundstage with higher sensitivity and high clarity. I've never heard such precise drum cymbals before! You could say this gives a more analytical sound at the expense of a little bass extension.

Variables: medium stock tips / worn over ear / approx 500hrs use

Wow! Extremely wonderful work done, Adapada. That kind of classification is what is required I believe and with mass efforts it can undoubtedly be achieved.

To make things easier for you guys, I'll be moving the non-EQ posts to the Trash Thread. In case you feel something important has been mistakenly moved, you can always let me know.

Alright, thread cleaned up. There are only 9 pages as compared to the 22 pages previously.

FYI all the Non-EQ threads have been moved here (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=36551).

Hi everyone!

I'm currently using Klpsch Image S4, here is my EQ...

3D - 1

Rvb - Off

i usually listen to Pop/Techno/Rock/Metal

Sound is just perferc fot thoses IEM

Tell me what you think of it!

I received my J3 about 2 weeks ago, and I've been using setting very similar to the above with my Klipsch S4.

But when I have M3B set to anything other than off, I get a pretty noticeable hissing. Do you of you guys experience same thing? Any way to get the hissing to stop while having M3B on, to around 5?

I do not use any amp FYI.

thanks

Yup I got the same setup and get that aswell, especially from lower quality files. Higher quality mp3 above 192kbs bitrate helps with the hissing. The S4's are naturally a bit hissy aswell imo

I'm using sennheiser CX-400II and long time tried so hard to cut peaks when singers saying S - it's somewere about 6kHZ. When I moved up some stripes it was only worse. So finally, I adjusted my player very well, I think.

I'd been using the first one for about a month and thought it was perfect. Just recently I made the one below it because I thought there was a bit too much bass missing from the first.

Variables: 500+ hours / worn over-ear / sounds best at volume 20

EDIT: oh and bass knob set to 1.5 - This is essential otherwise it sounds crap with my EQ's.

EDIT2: tbh, I think my first EQ is best... all it needs a decent amp I reckon to give it more thickness.

Hi all,

I am a big classical music fan with a newly bought J3. I've tried many different settings but I couldn't exactly find the clear and warm sound for classical music.
If there are any other classical fans around who could help me, that would be very much appreciated. (I use a Sennheiser PX100 and HD238)

Thanks a lot...

I've been doing a lot of messing around and listening on my Shure 530's and Alessandro MS1's..

If you're using good headphones leave all the external settings off ie: BBE, MachBass ect.. they end up doing more harm than good for clarity.

Try dipping the EQ into the negative and adjust from there..

leonsphinx

I strongly agree that you leave the external setting (BBE, MachBass, 3D surround, etc) off if you have good quality earphones as they tend to render the music unnatural. I have played around with a lot of settings and always reverted back to leaving them off. I only play around with the EQ settings depending on the type of music I'm listening to. But in the end, it all boils down to individual preference...
Am using Cowon S9 on UE Super.fi 5 Pro. They're an amazing pair

JunglePimp

I'd say you could leave MachBass and 3D surround out, but BBE would add to the quality in a positive manner, more often than not.

Here's a setting that should have a lot (A LOT!) of bass:

80hz: 3
220hz: 3
650hz: -2
1.8khz: 1
6.9khz: 3

BBE: 8
Mach3bass: 8
3D sound: off (it might sound better on in a car)
MP Enhance: on

Stereo Enhance: 6

For less bass, see earlier posts.

Note: I would start the volume on low, because the amount of bass coming out of car speakers is usually a lot more than when coming out of headphones.

Is there a definitive guide anywhere as to what the various settings are actually doing? I'd like to see What BBE, MachBass and MP Enhance are changing. I'd also like to know what the numbers represent and how narrow is narrow and how wide is wide, before trying to combine them into something meaningful. Just playing around with them usually results in a complete mess and I resort to Normal. Some of the settings described on here would completely destroy music, but then I don't have the same ears, monitors or music... confused...

Well, if you believe the claims for BBE MP Enhance, it should do exactly that as it aims to replace the missing harmonics which are cut off in a CD at 20khz making it sound like a DVDA or SACD. Why do the words silk purse and sow's ear come to mind?

Best you can do is try to get as close as possible to that preset by manually creating your own preset. It's tough but not impossible. Or contact one of the EQ-experts. One of them is the OP of this thread ;)

Trubass - 07

80 Hz Normal +6

9 kHz Narrow -1

All other settings/effects should be OFF.

Gives a natural sound and works with all kind of music.

Interesting. I also own the DBA-02 and find that they sound better/ more realistic with BBE turned down low. I've only had this problem with the DBA-02. Actually, the way I see it, it's no problem at all :D. I feel like BBE is meant to make bad earphones sound good. It works backwards on great earphones [thumbsup]. I used post #29 as a starting point (thanks, Tommifier) since he uses UEs as well.

IEM: Ultimate Ears Triple-Fi 10 (primary)
OEM: Grado SR60 (occasional/casual)

I'm just getting warmed up fiddling with settings; it's only Day 3 with my J3. But I'm auditioning some Grateful Dead right now and I'm pretty happy with these on the UE 10s - haven't fiddled with Grado settings yet:

105Hz +5 Normal
220Hz +5 Normal
780Hz +2 Wide
3.0kHz +4 Wide
13kHz +7 Normal

BBE Off
Mach3 Off
3D Surround Off
MP Enhance On

SE Off
Reverb Off, of course

Note: I'm not a kid anymore, and my hearing took a few hits over 200,000 motorcycle miles and a ton of Grateful Dead and many other live shows, so my settings might # your settings. Your Mileage May Vary. ;)

And no, I'm not just a Deadhead. Loads of old Blues, Classical, Jazz, Big Band, Motown, Oldies, Swing, Rockabilly and *real* R&B (from the old Atlantic label, for instance, not that crap they call R&B now) on the player. I've got about 2,500 vinyl LPs somewhere and have been buying CDs since they were invented - finally, my J3 with 64Gb onboard lets me roll around in all 10,340 tracks (to date, and only about 900 of those are Dead, so there). [thumbsup]

I honestly haven't done much tweaking to it yet as I would have liked because I'm trying to get my music library in order first; trying to find FLAC everything [rolleyes]. I'm also waiting on my comply tips.

Basically I just took my settings from my TM5s and tweaked them a little bit in the bass direction and down in the treble a bit. It turned out being pretty even. I'll do a little more later on but this is what I have now. I'ts a little high but I've been too lazy to turn it down. You should be able to gauge it a bit to get an idea.

I mainly listen to zeppelin, iron maiden, dream theatre, aerosmith etc.

I'm going to be buying the DBA-02's when they're in stock so I wanted to know eq settings etc.

When you have the settings finalised please post them here

Also how are you finding them??

Cheers

Here are the settings I've currently adopted, after few tweaks with techno music. What I wanted is clean, but quite thumping bass, and not too "ear piercing" but crystalline high. In other words "discotheque sound" with quality speakers.
Despite settings were tweaked with techno music, I found that the presets work still nice with other kind of music.

Sennheiser IE7:

175 hz Wide -7 db
220 hz Wide -4 db
1.4 khz Wide +2 db
1.8 khz Narrow -3 db
6.9 khz Narrow +2 db

BBE: 2
Mach3Bass: 4
3D Surround: Off
MP Enhance: Off

Stereo Enhance: 1
Reverb: Off

AKG K 317

105 hz Normal -1 db
385 hz Wide +4 db
1.4 khz Wide -2 db
4.1 khz Normal +0 db
6.9 khz Normal -1 db

BBE: Off
Mach3Bass: 7
3D Surround: Off
MP Enhance: Off

Stereo Enhance: 2
Reverb: 1

Remarks:

The most powerful setting is I think Mach3Bass, it helps to get "thumping bass" like in a discotheque, especially with the sennheiser IE7.
I didn't like MP Enhance. Anyway I've seen it's intended to restore lost frequencies with lossy files, and since I listen mostly to flac, I guess that's unnecessary.
I may re-tweak these settings later. But what I've noticed, is that by default the Sennheiser IE7 already have lot of bass, and if you push too much the mach3bass setting , they saturate. So I got to decrease the bass in the EQ , before trying to increase the Mach3Bass setting for something more "thumping". On the contrary I found that the akg k 317, was lacking on bass , and it's not as "thumping" as for the IE7. The high of k 317, are almost "ear piercing", and any BBE setting, just degrade the result.

EDIT 1: Lowered Mach3Bass setting for akg k 317, and eq setting for 105 hz band.
EDIT 2: Lowered Mach3Bass setting for IE7 and eq setting for 1.4khz band

Interesting. I also own the DBA-02 and find that they sound better/ more realistic with BBE turned down low. I've only had this problem with the DBA-02. Actually, the way I see it, it's no problem at all :D. I feel like BBE is meant to make bad earphones sound good. It works backwards on great earphones [thumbsup]. I'm still doing a little finishing to my tweaking but I'll post mine later.

What music do you listen to with them?

New age, Trance, electronic - mostly instrumental, in other words. It's a matter of personal preferrence i gues
Tried your settings and it did sound more natural, just like the sound from my iPod Nano. I actually prefer a warmer or V-shaped kind of setting

Thanks :)

for example BASS a tad bit higher, but more precise and "pointy" instead of it just flowing all around the place. If anybody has any suggestions, Im all ears ;)

For the headphones I'm using, I really think this is the best EQ. It's very clear for my classical and jazz music while still delivering crisp bass for my rap and rock albums. Give it a shot and let me know what you think.

I love the sound of my DBAs. They're easily the best pair I've ever owned. They're meant for the more analytical listener. The quality of the sound greatly depends on the fit, without a good fit you may find these to be bass light. Although it could just be my ears adjusting to their signature. Regardless, I love the quality and rumble of the bass with these. The treble is seemingly limitless while refraining from being harsh. It's a bright earphone, but it's flat if you get what I mean. There are no humps or peaks in the upper frequencies and the clarity is phenominal.

Now I listen to a lot of hip hop. With hip hop you're not gonna be getting the best out of these. They actually made me investigate other genres and man these babies can deliver. Cymbal crashes are lifelike. In cases of harmony you can break apart each instrument or voice contributing to it and know where it is in the soundstage. You hear everything, if its in the recording, you're gonna hear it. You are going to crave FLAC with these! If you listen to any rips below 320 you're wasting your money. Excellence in, excellence out. The same goes for low rips. If you feed it garbage, it'll spit it right back; transparent if you will. I use it with a FiiO E5 with the bass boost on. During the summer I'll probably pick up a Mystify which I heard works wonders with the DBA. So, yes, I love these, and when they break, I'm definitely getting another pair.

seriously, if you tried 2 configuration and didn't like them, it's better if you start adjusting settings yourself . equalizing is not a perfect science, there is not a perfect setting for every pair of earphones , you have to find what you like. A good starting point is to set one of the configuration you didn't like, and then try to figure out what exactly sounds wrong to your ears. I know is a somewhat long and tedious process, but it comes with is own rewards [thumbsup].

Shure se310:

this settings are experimental, created to address the shure's lack of bass, while mostly retaining mids and high. Is to be noted that upper high frequencies are almost painful to ear if not toned down a bit.

Among the 2 setting, i do prefer this:

3.0kHz +4 Wide
13kHz +7 Normal

BBE Off
Mach3 Off
3D Surround Off
MP Enhance On

Reverb Off,

However, i am losing some sound information on my left side.

i mean theres this song that plays music specifically only on either my left or right earphone at some point of time but not both and then returns back to normal (music on both earphones) after awhile.

It just skip playing that small portion of music and become silent when its supposed to play only on the left earphone.

The right side is fine.. its the left that is giving me the problem..

Both left and right earphone are in perfect condition and they work in my previous D2 and desktop computer.

I'm currently using the following setting for EQ: "BBE headphone"
The left side works in this setting.. just that its softer than the right.

[CUT]

That's really strange, I didn't know EQ could change sound balance [confused] (I'm pretty sure it can't). There is such an option in the s9 settings (you can find it in System > Audio l/r, be sure it's set to 0), but that should affect the whole song, not only the piece playing solo. Does the left side becomes completely silent or just very very quiet ?

jx87
01-31-2011, 14:00
i'm sure L/R is set to 0 and the rest of the song is balanced.

Its just that the customised EQ by this forum thread makes it completely silent for that portion.
The pre-set EQ by cowon "BBE headphone" on the otherside, is still hearable.. just that it is softer as compared to the right. i do not have this problem on my previous d2 or my computer desktop. even when i plug in my earphone to my desktop.

I think we're going OT, I don't want to clutter up a sticky thread. Why don't you open a new one with a link to this page? :)
Also, I'd like to know the name of the song, this whole situation is making me curious. It could be that the EQ lower just the specific frequencies played in that part of the song, but for this to be true the left ear "solo" should be extremely linear (is a very wide guess, but I don't have any clue about it [unsure]).
Also, I didn't find any strange setting in the EQ you posted.
I'm leaving the computer now, I'll get back to you later.

I have been using my J3 for a month now and just recently received my DBA-02. I am currently using these settings that I found from abi and I think they are great, but I am having quite a bit of sibilance at the volume of 16. Does anyone know how can I modify these settings to reduce the sibilance? When I try to change anything myself the sound becomes muffled. The iems have been burned in with pink noise for 50 hours so far and I'm using Shure olives as tips. I have tried other eq settings for DBA-02 on this site and they don't sound as clear as these settings, but I just find the sibilance to be quite annoying. I'm a noob at this so any help would be appreciated.

Hello.
Modeled on your settings, and I have to admit that I like very much. I listen to almost everything from the serious by the rap, house, year-on-metal and ie8 game beautifully. I would like to know what tips you use, and whether something can fixed the EQ in the same setting?

The 2nd portion is separated as more natural or more colorful, which i found is better with some songs. Something else I found is that I always hear a background hiss (more apparent in quieter songs or plugged into a pc) with these earphones that I previously thought was related to my eq. However even with everything tuned down its quite evident so I am assuming it is related to the high sensitivity and low impedance of these iems.

I've been using these settings for months and months now and I've slightly modified them since then. I am 100% sure of their perfection, but of course to my tastes. I listen to all kind of music so it works as a good balance for pretty much everything. Admittedly though, a little over half my music is Rock and that's what I mainly tested and modified them with, but as I said, it works well with everything else.

EQ-
80 Hz Normal: +6 dB (If your phones are new/not burned in, you can increase it to +7 dB if you'd like)
220 Hz Wide: +3 dB (I've proved to myself many times that any higher on this setting only creates problems)
1.4 kHz Wide: +5 dB (You can try +4 dB if it's to your preference)
3.0 kHz Wide: +5 dB
11.7 kHz Wide: +9 dB

BBE+-
BBE: 5
Mach3Bass: 4 (If your phones are new/not burned in, you can increase it to 5, similarly like with the 80 Hz setting)
3D Surround: 1 (Your choice to keep it off or at 1...)
MP Enhance: On (Also your choice to keep it on or off. I like the occasional noticeable improvements it makes and it never ruins the sound really...)

SE-
Stereo Enhance: 3 (Your choice to keep it 1 through 4)
Reverb: Off

*Of course everything can be changed to your preference. I was mentioning subtle differences that wouldn't change the essence of my settings.

This might work with the Klipsch S4's as well but I'm not sure. I've just heard the sound signature of the two are similar with the Brainwavz M2's just doing certain things better.

Using CX880 earphones. They have quite a lot of sibilence. These settings rectify most of it however.

EQ:
175 Normal -1
300 Wide -3
650 Normal -4
1.8k Narrow -1
6.9K Narrow 0

BBE+
BBE 4
Mach3Bass 8
3D Surround Off
MP Enhance Off

SE
Stereo Enhance Off
Reverb Off

Any suggestions?

If anyone has the Brainwavz M2's, I'm curious what you guys think of these settings.

azureIIDX: Try my EQ settings if your looking for something with deep bass with strong impact yet keeping clarity in voice and wide soundstage.

Just to remind people on how to get to EQ settings, play a song (which you think tests how far treble, bass, clarity and soundstage) and on the screen playing the screen, you should see in the UI 'Option' or 'Setting' then clicking that, go to 'JetEffect 3.0'. If your in it already, press the gear button on any of User 1 to 4. Now try this:

EQ:

80HZ (Wide) 5 (5 being the level of the frequency)
300HZ (Normal) 3
780HZ (Narrow) -2
2.4kHz (Normal) -1
11.7kHz (Narrow) 2

BBE: 10
Mach3Bass: 9
3D Surround: Off (Using this may result in a displaced, muddy sound IMO)
MP Enhance: On (Important if listening to music in MP3 format)

SE (Stereo Enhance): 1 (IMO, notching it higher makes this EQ's bass and overall sound muddy. 1 Gives it impact.)
Reverb: Off

Tell me your opinion on this! I'm listening with this EQ on my Brainwavz ProAlpha.

The purposes of these headphones I'm sure are well known, so they tend to stylize every genre of music very similarly; EQ can only do so much with these... Regardless though, harshness in certain frequencies and clarity are factors that still make a difference and that's what I feel was affected. I also tried to push bass to a natural state without it getting aggressively fake. Not purposely, in accordance with the flat EQ that's suggested about the headphones, the EQ it ended up similarly so as I was slowly making my adjustments (the lesser the gaps, I feel that suggests good things).

EQ-
80 Hz Normal: +7 dB (If your phones are new/not burned in, you can increase it to +8 dB if you'd like)
220 Hz Wide: +5 dB
1.4 kHz Wide: +6 dB
3.0 kHz Wide: +6 dB (You can try +5 dB if you'd like; for some things, 6 may be a little much)
11.7 kHz Wide: +5 dB

BBE+-
BBE: 4
Mach3Bass: 8
3D Surround: 1 (Your choice to keep it off or at 1 really...)
MP Enhance: On (I think this is more so important with these headphones)

SE-
Stereo Enhance: 3 (Your choice to keep it 1 through 4)
Reverb: Off

Hi,

Would appreciate some Shure 535 settings if anyones come up with anything.

Looking through the examples here, the frequency / normal or wide etc - there doesn't seem to be any consistent themes.

Or can anyone talk through in simple terms on what each thing means?

I guess I just need to play around with it but there are an almost infinite number of possible settings and I don't fancy my chances.

With your settings my m50's sound muddier..
By increasing the mach3bass so much you make the bass boomy.Try to reduce it to 3 at least.
Also it feels like the sound is coming for very far and struggling to reach the ear with a touch of a reverb feeling on vocals...
i don't think you achieve clarity with this settings, only bassheavy and boomy results..

This is what I am using with my Audio Technica ATH-M50s:

80 Hz: 4 (wide)
220 Hz: -2 (wide)
1.4 kHz: 4 (wide)
4.1 kHz: 8 (wide)
11.7 kHz: 5 (wide)

BBE: 4
Mach3Bass: 10
3D Surround: 3
MP Enhance: On
SE: 2
Reverb: 2

I listen to mostly Metal (Death, Black, Tech, Prog). It's a very full sound, so I need to fiddle with it a bit more, probably alter band widths from wide I think...

thx for that settings! i just lowered the mach3bass to 2

btw, if anyone posts settings - please add your music style, too.

What M2? Are you talking about the Brainwavz M2? If so, just use BBE MP, that's what makes the M2 sing.

Thanks for trying out my settings. I tried everything possible to tamper with the sound of bass. Can you describe what particularly you don't like about it? I'll tell you my experience with it. The Cowon doesn't have very good bass in my opinion. EQing it removes detail from it and Mach3Bass essentially just increases thump.

I have the Cowon J3 (8GB) with a fine pair of Sennheiser IE7 Pro earphones.
Any idea what JetEffect 3.0/BBE+ settings should I use for ROCK/METAL music?

Oh... If you want/like a clearer bass sound, this isn't the best marriage of player and headphones. If I'm imagining what you like correctly, there's no way to really directly effect that with low frequency EQ/Mach3Bass. The only thing that might get it more to how you like is taking it easy on all the settings. It's just not really worth it at all IMO. All the settings would have to change though what you'd get instead is more of a cold/bitter tone in exchange for more analytical bass.

Also, these headphones are meant for playful bass - not necessarily meaning it's inaccurate; they're good at bass and I love its sound, but from the little you've described, other headphones I feel will have LFE more to your liking.
